So I heard that while Main Street is cute and fun, the rest of the town can be scary, especially around the university. I heard that the locals aren't friendly/ don't like Wes students. Is this true? What are your feelings about the town around Wes?

well, yes and no. First of all, Main Street IS the most visible part of Middletown; everything else is either countryside or suburbia. So, if the perception is that Main Street is “cute and fun”, that’s saying a lot.

The problem, as anyone who has stayed overnight in Middletown can tell you, is that the downtown commercial area that abuts Wesleyan basically shuts down after dark (not everyone who works in Middletown lives there), turning the area into a kind of Forbidden Forest for all but the most dedicated bar hoppers.

The locals run the gamut from red necks to yuppies; it’s the center of the state, so a lot of loose change still rolls Middletown’s way. Suffice it to say that a lack of alternative afterschool activities tends to draw a disproportionate number of young people to the campus area. Most are harmless, but it pays to be aware of your surroundings.

It will be interesting to see whether the longer daylight hours and more relaxed feeling that generally descends upon the town during the summer has any effect once Wesleyan begins its first scheduled summer session ever.
