@CADREAMIN, very much appreciate all your input about TTP here on CC. Thanks very much for taking the time.
Can TTP be “applied for” coming out of hs? If not, is it offered to most/all high stat legacies who apply, but are rejected coming out of hs?
I’ve known so many high achieving SCions who’ve been rejected over the past few years, that it would frankly be foolish for any highly motivated legacy, even with great stats, rigor, EC’s, and essays, to just assume they’ve a good chance at admission. I’m really happy the TTP exists, but if not for your input on CC, it would still be mostly a big mystery to me…
@USCWolverine No, you cannot apply for it - I know that for certain because we asked that question for my current freshman who had desires to start abroad. We talked to three different people just to be sure we were getting the right answer.
Agree - legacy has lost a lot of it’s pull and weight at USC, no question. It is not a safety unless you are at the “bought a building” level. Even then, you better have stats in the range.
I have a love/hate thing about the TTP - it should be guaranteed admission if you hit a certain gpa, like Cornell does. I feel like it holds kids hostage otherwise. I mean it is great if all you ever wanted to do was go to USC - and you like the idea of saving money at a cc, or you use it as a backup plan for that school that may be in too cold a climate or far from home, etc. Or you want to study abroad like my youngest would have (but she did get admitted directly), then TTP is fantastic. But I would never give up plans to attend a four year with the freshman experience and change course to a CC just to please a school that didn’t want me in the first place and won’t guarantee that they will accept me (again). Once bit twice shy as they say…I think some at the four years don’t bond and spend their time dreaming of USC “and miss” some experiences in a very cool year of their life that you can’t do over. It is hard to trust that you will get in without a guarantee, especially since you went through rejection once.
And the meetings in the summer - some people may get the “nice advisor”, but others get the “you are lucky we are even considering doing this for you” attitude. You are basically spending the money and time traveling there to prove you are interested, then after all that you get 30 minutes where they go over a brochure that is also online. Agree with another poster on a different thread about the holier than thou attitude in the USC admission’s office in the Tutor Center. I have three Trojans and still find the air in there pompous and rude when we have been up there, lol. We must just hit the snootty ones, I am sure there are nice ones somewhere in there. At least they are nice on the phone. As a side note, those at the department levels are fantastic. That snobby air seems to all be in admissions.
Thanks for your candor, CADREAMIN, and congrats at having three kids at Troy! I also appreciate the balance of your comments. OK, just one more question then (which you may or may not be able to answer): WHO then gets offered TTP? Only a handful of amazing applicants? Only legacies? Only some legacies?
Again, I realize you’re not USC adcom, so I certainly don’t expect you to necessarily know the answers here. Thanks in advance and Fight On!
Full disclosure: Although I was blessed in being able to attend USC as a frosh, I’m already talking to my kids extensively about CC first. By the time they graduate hs, I really don’t think (at least I hope not) going to CC would be too big a letdown for them. We shal seel. Mind, your comments about bonding and that once-in-a-lifetime frosh experience are well-taken and spot-on.
It is not just legacy anymore at all, perhaps it was created for that. But now it also includes kids without a legacy hook that may have a 4.6 and 33 ACT that they just didn’t have room for - say in popular majors like Business or CSBA - whichever they are getting a high number of quality applications to.
It is certainly not granted to all legacies or even legacies with high scores - it is really a program to admit those that would have otherwise got in, if there was say, 5% more room (just a guess on that figure). It is just a small part of transfers overall. I would be surprised if it is offered to more than a few hundred, but again a guess.
@jj1999 If you search Youtube you can find videos featuring the campus. There is a student-made video with a good tour of the tiny John Cabot U main building, “Quick Tour of John Cabot University: Guarini Campus”.
Hey so I have a question… So I was offered the TTP last year, and wanted to pursue it, however I was admitted to NYU and decided to attend NYU. I have finished my first year at NYU, and I regret not applying as a Sophomore to USC, while addressing that I was offered the TTP. I don’t like NYU because it isn’t a traditional college campus, and doesn’t give that true college experience. That being said, I would like to apply to USC after my sophomore year, but could I still mention that I was offered the TTP?
I really regret not applying as a sophomore transfer… I don’t know why I didn’t. I was admitted into NYU for Spring Admit, so I didn’t have any grades to show, however I could’ve shown my HS grades.
@CADREAMIN Thanks for all your help! I went to the meeting that they told my what courses to take. I am currently going to UC Riverside as a business major with a full tuition scholarship for all four years. Do you think that USC is worth all the debt? I love USC and I really want to go there however I come from a low income family. Also do you think that it matters what college we transfer from? I know a lot of people that are going to AUP, london, rome etc. but some are going to great schools like UCLA, UCSB etc. And I am here transferring from Uc riverside which is not that great. Any thoughts on that? thanks!
@candylover132 A business degree with no debt is fantastic - and “even from UCR” as you say - that is still great. Congratulations on that!
The school you come from will not matter at all for TTP. GPA counts most of all, then courses taken (but way less important for TTP than for regular transfers). Whether a two or 4 year doesn’t matter, and which 4 year really doesn’t matter. ECs mean zippo to TTP.
My suggestion would be to dive into UCR - the school and the business program - and see how it goes. TTP is there for you if you want it (and apply again). But don’t go to UCR committed to leave or you will miss a clean fun start to your college freshman year. You will know more how you feel about everything around winter break. As low income, you should get aid from USC, but may not know the exact amount till accepted which isn’t until next spring/summer. And this year we have seen TTPs not find out they are in until later June and July which is nuts, and I hope not an ongoing trend. Meaning, you have awhile before you have to do anything. The first deadline for you is to apply by Feb 1st, then you still wait to hear. So you have all this time to decide what you want to do.
I get the draw of USC, but a debt free college degree is a wonderful thing. What we don’t know is what aid you would get from USC - so it could keep it in play. The USC experience and alumni network can be incredible, but you really need to have the numbers in front of you to decide how incredible they are. 10K verus 50K versus 100K in debt is very different, and very different to different people. I just don’t think you have all the info you need to make a decision yet. You need your experience at UCR and the aid figures to weigh in on any decision. It is one you just can’t make yet. So for now, just go through the motions of TTP to keep it open as an option, one that you may choose to take or not as this next year goes on.
@CADREAMIN I think I speak for a lot of people, but I honestly wouldn’t know anything without you! Thank you so much for all the advice! Also I will keep ttp in mind and give it my all at UCR! If I dont get accepted or the financial aid is not what i need at USC, I can always apply for hella scholarships or take loans (God forbid). Also do Marshall ttp students normally get in for the fall semester or spring semester? If spring, is there any way to up my chances to fall acceptance instead of spring acceptance? Once again thank you so much!!
@candylover132 You’re so sweet, thanks for the kind words. Spring/fall admit is a complicated thing with variables that are out of your control. How many vacate spots in a certain school, certain major - there is some forecasting/estimating done to determine this within USC. Then there is who and how many you are competing against for the spot. So while it can be a few formulas and a little bit random with things you can’t control, the best thing you can do to help you get the most out of the TTP admit process is the one thing you can control - get a high gpa.
And one piece of advice many who just went through the process may agree with…don’t get obsessed with this site - it is a long ride and will make you insane if you track things too closely for that long a period. Go live life at UCR and just check in now and then or when you have a question. Good luck - enjoy freshman year and meeting new friends!
@CADREAMIN Again thank you so much! Yeah I’ll really work hard to get a high GPA, and just pray for some good luck. Yeah I am going to take a break from college con. and enjoy the rest of my summer and first year of college lol. thanks!
Last year, I was told there were about 400 to 500 students offered TTP some non legacies, but more legacies. I don’t know the percentage of legacy students offered TTP. Generally the legacy students offered TTP have high stats.
Different topic, I heard Cornel offers a similar plan for legacies. I don’t know if other private schools do or not.
