The True Importance of SAT

I've read many threads on CC about the importance of SAT and whether some colleges look big at them or not. So i thought it would be interesting to see what were the lowest SAT scores ( i guess under 2200 is low by ivy standards?) people recived and still were accpeted into the top ivies. Being a rising senior and ready to tackle the admission process, I was also looking for what hooks or distingusing things u had. Like say someone with 2100 scores and all 700 on SAT 2's applies to HYP etc. but ranked first, all A's throughout, great ec's, great teacher recs, and not really any hooks- wil he be out of the top colleges range? Please feel free to post any comments

i'll bump this because i'd like to know as well.

i got a 1980 on my SAT mid 500's on SAT II's and was ranked 17 out of like 115. And I'll be going to Princeton next year

^ Not Normal

oh, i forgot to say that i am an athlete

thanks umm do u know any non athletes (like myself and perhaps the others) who were also accepted? and back to the question asked earlier is that 2100 enough with those criteria?

Out of the students I know who got into Princeton, the lowest SAT score was 2240, but her ECs were REALLY impressive.

Do you remember when the SAT scores messed up and colleges had to review rejected applicants?

The SAT matters much more than people say!

Anything over 2100 will give you a chance at Princeton. That is equivalent to a 1400 on the old SAT. Also note that the Math and reading portions are apparently looked at more closely by the admissions office.

Yeah, I had a 2310, but a 1580 on math/reading combined. I really think SATs are more a way to qualify for consideration than a real help ... they won't let someone in because they have perfect scores, but if the scores are low ... below 2100 for a non-athlete or URM ... their chances of success will drop.

Because really, within a certain range, SAT scores are not precisely indicative of relative intelligence. A person with a 2200 may be more intelligent than someone with a 2400. Test-taking is a skill that some are better at ... Just cause I have a knack for it doesn't mean I'm going to be more successful in college than someone with less of an aptitude for it. Most college counselors are well aware of that fact.

but again um if u have stellar recs- i guess all top in my life checkmarks and other strong stuff like valedictorian status and strong ec's, u know doesnt that counteralance the 2100

and just another question- if u talk to like a professor can they like persaude the adcoms and if say u have a sibling in a HY school wouldnt they assume that both are pretty simialr and kind of lean towards you? curious to know

First of all, a 2100 isn't a bad score. I'd focus more on standing out as an individual - even being valedictorian and having great recs didn't get my friend into HYP, and he had great SATs and a great ACT as well. You can't guess what will happen or control what the adcoms will want ... put your energy into any ecs or volunteer work you care about, and that will make you more desireable.

As for the sibling question ... it's really hard to say. My older brother goes to Princeton, as does the older brother of another prefrosh Tiger I know, but that isn't necessarily an indication. My record was about on par with my brother's, although our ecs differed somewhat, and the other kid I know also got into HY. Bottom line - I really wouldn't count on it. It's too hard to tell. I'll say it again - you're better off working hard and expecting nothing than trying to calculate your chances now.

Princeton's ED SAT Average for this year was a... GASP!!
2170! (1450 M+V).

This means about 50% of those accepted Early scored below such a "low" score.

This makes up almost 25% of the whole Princeton Class of 2010... I'm sure not all of these people are legacies nor athletes.

It's important to be passionate about something, have a hook, AND excel in academics... not all kids who score 2300+ have all of these traits. Heck, some can't even write creative essays which is a must for Princeton.

If Princeton's admissions criteria were only SAT scores, then Princeton would have at least a 1540 (2310) SAT average.

In summary: don't worry about SAT scores so much.

hey all! well i got a measly 2040 on my SAT after 3 tries (the 3rd one was a waste), but i never took any classes or tutoring and never opened up a study book.

and my highest SAT II score was a 710 on Spanish, with a 690 on Math2, and a 610 on Literature.

So there's hope.

and i hadn't taken any AP tests yet when I was applying.

just write really amazing essays and make sure you choose teachers who know you as a person, not just a student, so that your recs are out of this world!!!

angela from nj

Did Princeton represent that they consider the math and reading more important than for instance, reading and writing for a liberal arts major?

I got a 2130 on my SATs, but the writing/essay section is what brought me down...i redeemed my self with 800s on all my subject tests

thanks guys ive been away for a while...im currently in a mac store in chicago

one day if i may ask are u a URM or have any major hooks.
