I have quite a bit to explain in my additional comments. Some below par grades, a re-take of a passed class, etc. I think I’ll need the space for that. I’ll fit it if I can, if I can’t then I will let then contact me to ask.

@2016Candles did you get a supplemental? Because I think what happens is anyone who has a gap, where mentioned or not, gets a supplemental.

What it says in the app is to put gaps, hardships, etc in add’l comments. It also says NOT to duplicate in essays what was said in app, and since not all UCs read the essays for admissions, I would put it in add’l comments, expect to maybe get a supplemental, and write about your strengths in the essay - unless, of course, it’s a strong hardship story to tell, then the essay is probably appropriate (with a brief reference in add’l comments). I know of several people who briefly mentioned setbacks in add’l comments, nowhere else, and got in without any questions asked.

@Bear87 definitely what you said above should go in add’l comments only.

I did get the supplemental. There is a specific part of the application that asks you to explain gaps. If I remember correctly, it’s where you put in all the colleges you’ve attended, grades, and dates. If the dates aren’t consecutive, it asks you to explain. You can’t submit the app if you don’t put something there.

@2016Candles oh, I see…

Yes, I had the same. When I entered grades, for each gap in between attendance it makes you fill in an explanation. So odd that they still contact you to ask you to repeat that info.

They really have the system down to a science. I’m impressed with it all, really.
