The top 3 schools, all use holistic admissions, can’t consider race in admissions, are based in states with a large population (which means they can recruit from a larger in-state pool of high performing/low SES students), and offer very good merit/need based aid to low SES students.

@Gator88NE , that is one interpretation. But California and Florida are much larger states than Michigan, Wisconsin, and Virginia, and by virtue of those numbers have more low SES students to choose from who meet their academic qualifications. Cal and UCLA’s LEG is Asian, and the CA population less white than other states, so that may reflect differing state demographics more than better aid.

@TooOld4School While I agree that being a much larger state is a significant advantage, you can’t discount the importance of cost when looking at low SES students. It not only impacts enrollment rates, but also graduation rates. A low SES student is much more likely to pass on an “expensive” in-state flagship, and enroll at a directional that offers significant merit-based aid.
