I paid my 50 dollar fee a while ago, like November/December or so. I don’t know what the next step is for me, should I sign on to the website and try and find out what to do next?

I don’t want to decide on a dorm until I go to the school in March, and I’m also considering private dorms near campus.

By paying that fee do I somewhat reserve a spot in line, or is there a chance that all or the dorms could be filled before March and before I have a chance to decide?

OK, I actually paid my $50 right now. I’m going to go ahead and pay the $200 so then I get my housing contract in my email.

So, just a couple of questions about bathrooms. So, when we say private bathroom does that include a private shower?

What exactly is a connecting bathroom (does it also have a shower) and how does that work? (who shares it, etc.)

Are the community washrooms very clean? Is it gross at all? I guess I’m really aprehensive about community washrooms/bathrooms because I went to a baseball tournament when I was 12 (maybe some of you have been to this tournament in Cooperstown Dreams Park) and we had community showers and bathrooms. It wasn’t that clean and it was a little awkward.

Thanks. Honestly, other things are secondary. The showers + washrooms are what bother me the most. I guess if I visit and I find that they are fine I will go ahead and pick one with a community bath, but for now I’m looking for info on the above 3 q’s.

(And since I paid my $50, now my ‘spot’ in line is secure right? It doesn’t matter if I submit my preferences in 2 weeks or 2 months right? I still have the same ‘priority’ with my spot/time I submitted correct?)

Viggy, don’t get your hopes up too much. My son sent his $50 deposit in October, and he still didn’t get his first choice (the Whitis FIG). I think a lot of prospective students send in their deposit VERY early.

I live in a dorm with a community bathroom and, in all honesty, while it’s not the optimal situation, it’s not nearly as bad as I was anticipating. People, being somewhat educated adults and being more mature than 12 year olds, seem to recognize that other people have to use the bathrooms as well and they respect that. Besides that, they get cleaned every day… if you have a connecting bathroom, for instance, a Mexican standoff might occur between you and your suitemates and then you’re stuck with a dirty bathroom for weeks on end… also, if by “community showers” you mean big open rooms full of showers, I don’t think they have those anywhere on campus. At any rate you’ll learn to deal with it.

OK, so do the private baths have showers? Also do the connecting baths have showers? And finally, could I dorm in Honors even if I’m not an Honors student?

Does that^ only apply to upperclassmen or incoming freshman? I don’t think I’ll get into Dean’s Scholars due to when I applied, etc. but my stats might be worthy.

Viggy: I’m a low maintenance gal. So, don’t think I was guessing that you were a girl. I was merely saying that IFF you are a girl …

I’m jealous for my son and for you that Hardin and SRD are not availalbe with their home cooked meals. :(

We are checking out College Houses when we go to the VIP session, in addition to the on campus dorms. S has not accepted his admission, so my understanding is that he still has housing priority over those who sent in their $50 later than him and have not accepted their admission. He cannot get a housing contract until he accepts his admissions offer. I don’t think he’ll make his admissions decision until April.

You are correct Eaglemom…the $50.00 bought his place in line… he wont get a housing contract until he commits to UT. If he is not sure, then I would wait, because it wont matter as far as what housing assignment he gets.

So, just a couple of questions about bathrooms. So, when we say private bathroom does that include a private shower?
Yes, it does, although it is very difficult to get a private bathroom unless you are living in san jac or duren.
What exactly is a connecting bathroom (does it also have a shower) and how does that work? (who shares it, etc.)
Connecting bathrooms have everything a private bathroom does (sink, shower, toilet), with the exception that some have 2 sinks. 2 dorm rooms (4 people) share it, and they all pay the extra 500 dollars a year for it. This makes it not worth the extra money in my opinion- if you know you will get a private bath because you will be living in san jac or duren thats a different story, but the connecting aren’t worth it because they honestly have less privacy and are dirtier than the community baths.
It is a bit awkward- but they are clean (cleaned 2x a day) and they aren’t really that bad.

As for honors housing- they vary rarely accept non honors students into honors housing because there just aren’t enough rooms. A warning- pre-med classes are on the north side of campus and kinsolving and the honors halls are going to be the closest to the buildings for your classes (welch, painter, possibly engineering buildings for calculus). It really sucks to have to walk across campus every day for classes if you live in say, san jac and you’re a science major. At this point if I were you, I would just see what I get and look at other choices. Honestly, Jester is probably going to be the only place left with spots still- housing fills up very very quickly and everyone currently living in dorms who will be staying in the dorms next year have already gotten their housing assignments. Hope I answered some questions, good luck!

How do you choose room preferences? Is it just by the dorm (ex. Jester or Kinsolving, etc.) or is it by dorm and room type? (ex. Choice 1: Duren with private bath, Choice 2: Jester w. Community bath, etc.)

Also, when I submit the housing contract and get the email/mail to chose my housing preferences, will they tell me which ones are still available or do I need to guess at which ones are?

Unfortunately, you have to select 1. double or single(singles are full already, I’m pretty sure). 2. bathroom preferences (connecting/private or community) then 3. dorm. So if you choose connecting/private you can’t distinguish between the two or distinguish by dorm. I’m not sure if they will tell you what is already full, but if you call them during the day monday-friday I’m sure they can tell you then. Let me know if you have any more questions

I just have a question about living in dorms in general (I’m going to stay at an off-campus private dorm).

In terms of sharing a bedroom with someone, what is it like?
I’m from Australia and I live at home and commute to uni, but I find it kind of weird to be sharing a bedroom with a a complete stranger? You’d both have different sleeping patterns, what if your roommate does weird things at night…etc.

A bathroom, OK, I can understand, but I get the impression that sharing a bedroom will be a little uncomfortable? Or do people just get used to it?

I have a choice of private or shared at this stage, and I do save alot of money if I go shared - so yeah, let me know what you guys think!

It’s very strange at first, especially if you’re a relatively private person (like myself). I met my roommate through Facebook, and we chatted online quite a few times before meeting up in person, so that definitely made things a bit less awkward. It was still a huge adjustment, though… even now, over halfway through the year, there’s still quite a few things that I haven’t quite grown accustom to.

As for different sleeping patterns: my roommate tends to have a lot more homework than I do, and I generally go to sleep before she does, so she’ll usually go study at the PCL or the study lounge on our floor. If she stays in the dorm, she’ll just dim the lights a bit. My orientation roommate, however, was entirely awful and did many “weird things” at night. It’s just a toss-up when it comes to roommates, really. There’s a chance that you’ll end up with someone who becomes one of your best friends (like my roommate), but there’s an equal chance that you’ll be stuck with someone who will make your life a living hell. Personally, I wouldn’t feel confident enough in my luck to risk living with the latter, but I can’t speak for everyone.

Unfortunately, your chances of getting a single aren’t very high if you’re not a returning student. Although sharing a room with a stranger definitely isn’t the worst thing in the world, it’s not exactly something I’d like to repeat in the future. I think everyone sort of needs the “dorm experience,” though. :)

^^I would think not. There simply are not enough places for all the honors students, and many honors students end up at Jester anyway, so I don’t see UT housing making that happen.

Just to clarify, there is no benefit of paying the $200 deposit now (unless I’m certain I’m coming, of course) to fill in the housing contract sooner, since they assign based in order that we submitted the $50 right?
