The University of Texas Dorms

I have a question:
Soo I submitted my $50 along with my preference for a single or a double. It says I’ll be receiving an e-mail with everything else?
Do I not get this e-mail until I deposit my $200 to attend?
Does everyone get this e-mail at the same time?
Does the time I get this e-mail have an effect on weather or not I get the dorm of my choice?

GS-Your post helped us alot this weekend touring dorms. I was wondering if you could explain further. San Jac seemed different than Jester and the ‘talk’ is that as a freshman you might not meet as many others as you might in Jester where you cannot help meeting tons of students daily. They told us you need to know someone in jester to get going your freshman year, opinions.

As a transfer, where would be the best dorm? And is it likely to get a single room?

@hookem2012–the talk is true. I would recommend living in Jester, Moore-Hill, Kinsolving for your first year and then transferring to san jac or Duren once you’ve got a solid friend base on campus.

Bump:
Just to clarify, there is no benefit of paying the $200 deposit now (unless I’m certain I’m coming, of course) to fill in the housing contract sooner, since they assign based in order that we submitted the $50 right?

@NickKent: from everything I have read, you are correct.

My best friend and I are for sure attending the UT-Austin in the fall. We have taken two campus tours but the only dorm hall we saw was Duren. We have decided to take a campus tour the first weekend in May so we can check our dorm choices. What do you think of these choices? My room mate is completely for all-female but I rather be co-ed. It’s part of the college experience. Can you give a bit more detail on each of these dorms?

1) Brack/Roberts/Prather 2) Kinsolving 3) Littlefield 4) Moore-Hill 5) San Jacinto

1) those dorms are small. none of them have elevators, but they are good local in relation to jester (if you dont want to live there.) the rooms are of good size though. i lived in roberts before and my roomate and i had our own halves of the room; so i mean if we can do that… lol its all good. its at the bottom of the hill in comparison to the whole campus. it’d be an uphill walk to most classes unless you were heading towards the art building or something.

2)kins. its alright. my best friend lives there. its drabby looking kinda. 60s style. the beds look like strange couches. closets look like they’re shared, but really theres a wall on the inside so each girl gets her own side.its got the buffet which is convenient. awesome omelets for breakfast. and!! a computer lab! very convenient if you run out of paper and need a place to print. its close to the drag though. thats always nice! – close to kirbey lane!!

3) littlefield. i live here and i LOVE IT. it’s the most homiest dorm on campus. all the furniture is antique from the 1920s. we have tons of traditions. tea parties, alumn visits, dances with the honors quad and simkins/creekside. i think it was the best place i could have lived as a freshman. the littlefield patio cafe is underneath - also convenient. ive heard people say we’re far from ‘‘everything’’ (jester or gregory? lol) but really its not far at all and theres a bus stop right outside anyway. we even have a mascot - the lady bug. ghost stories of Alice Littlefield. a library with old yearbooks. a super comfy living room where i haven spent many a night watching movies with friends. everyone tends to get along here. its nice being all girls because you can just walk out looking like whatever and not care! our little individual mailboxes are so cute too. its really old-fashioned. and theres loads of places to sit and study. its always a relaxing place. i call it home.

4) moore-hill. havent heard too much.

5) san jac. brand spankin new quality for rooms. but its more expensive and you basically get the same as any other dorm. (a room with another person. meh) but theres more singles i think…i dont know!

hope that helps a little! :)

sasha2014: How did you end up in Littlefield? Just wondered since you said you lived in Roberts before but are now at Littlefield which is a freshman dorm. Why did you leave Roberts? Just looking for info on dorms!

What might be a good dorm for a RTF freshman?

Any feedback on Towers?
Thanks!

The Towers is basically the party dorm for people in frats and sororities. There’s been a ton said about it already on this thread-just search it and you’ll get a lot of information on it.

@Tiger 1992

I lived in Roberts when I started school for the month of June. Since it was the summer session, I got a different room assignment for the fall. It was inconvenient I know. Littlefield was actually my last choice, but it turned out for the better.

Roberts was cozy though. I miss it, but the location of Littlefield/The Quad turned out to be better for me!

The Quad/Whitis Court/Dobie/Kinsolving; The communications building is on the corner of Dean Keeton and Whitis. I see loads of RTF majors there all the time; where the DT is printed and ACL (pbs) is taped, etc. I would guess that area.

sasha: Aren’t the rooms in Littlefield tiny? I am the youngest child, siblings are off to college, so I am used to having a lot of space to myself (lol.) Where are most freshman classes (core stuff)? I will be in McCombs, but I know that that really doesn’t matter first year. I will probably be taking the usual: econ, bio, history, gov, etc. Thanks for the info.

tiger:

Yep…pretty much…they’re the smallest, but livable and the closets are big. I had my own room too back home and it was pretty spacious. I have my own room here though but that’s because I just never got paired up with a roommate so I’m paying as if I lived in a double. Beat the system! There are a few other singles here too. But I think you’d have to be lucky!

I’m an English major so most of my classes are either in the FAC or six pack. Not sure about McCombs. If you look at registration from past semesters, look for the classes you’d want to take and their locations should still be listed. Location will change from semester to semester anyway. I used to have classes all over the place last semester and now its just very central to the tower. If you want to stick close to McCombs then the south end of campus might be your best bet. I mean if you want space, go for San Jac, but good luck cause it goes fast!

Thanks for the info. I paid my housing app deposit first week of October. Don’t know what my chances at San Jac would be, based on that, since it seems like a lot of upperclassmen stay in SJ after freshman year.

I feel pretty stupid, but I just recently realized that the housing deposit is used to secure your spot in line for On-campus housing.

I sent it a couple days ago, apparently WAY after anyone on here. Am I basically out of luck for on-campus housing now?

FutureLonghorn, it might be a good idea to call and ask, so you can arrange alternate housing if you need to.

As a freshman, I think I might choose Jester.

How close is it to the library?
How close is it to the gym?
Is it that loud? Will I be able to study? or even sleep at night?
How is the cost compared to the others?

please help!

literally right across a narrow street

literally right across a narrow street - the gym, the PCL and Jester are all in one general area, located a few hundred feet away from each other.

I can’t speak to this because I don’t live there, but most freshmen live there and don’t have any huge problems with it, so you’ll probably be fine. If you literally can’t sleep at night because of noise tell your RA.

I’m pretty sure that the cost is the same for every dorm except Duren, San Jac, and Whitis.
