I’ve read through a lot of the things about honors housing - is there anyone I can PM to ask extensive questions about the honors housing and such? PM me if you do, please.

I live in Dobie this year and I love it. The location is great. Just a quick walk to Gregory, Jester, or the tower. Much closer to almost everything you’ll want to do than some on campus dorms like Duren or Kinsolving. I don’t feel disconnected from campus at all. It’s seriously exactly like being on campus which is awesome. The food is good, but I’m not the pickiest of eaters. I haven’t tasted anything I didn’t like. The kitchen’s open all day which is nice and if you get the unlimited meal plan you can go in just to fill up your water bottle or grab a snack. They have amazing brownies out everyday, by the way, which is probably going to cause me some damage by the end of the year. I highly recommend that you request a room closer to the bottom if you live there. I’m about in the middle and it takes a while to get up/down, I can’t imagine what it’d be like living on floor 20-something. Elevators take a while but you get used to it and it’s not that bad. It’s a quiet dorm in general and I don’t really know that many people in Dobie. If I hadn’t found other ways of making friends, I would have hated that. But seeing as I was able to make friends in other places, I kind of like that I have a quiet, homey place to come back to.

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask me. As I said, I love Dobie and I’m already even considering living there again next year. It’s great.

Hi all,

I’ll be coming to the UT as an international student for the Spring 2012 semester and was just wondering which dorms were recommended?

I’m female, 23, and although I want to be able to have a good time and party, I don’t want a dorm that is so wild, I never get any sleep. I’m basically just looking for a friendly environment, good facilities, and somewhere where I’ll have no trouble making new friends, seeing as I won’t know anyone when I arrive!

Your recommendations are very much appreciated thanks :)

I’d recommend staying in Moore-Hill. It’s very social and has a great community, the rooms are decent and it’s not too wild.

If anyone was wondering about Castilian, it’s pretty decent. I don’t understand why some people complain. Here’s my basics on it…

Pros:
- The food is pretty good (a bit limited in choice but their pastas are tasty and they have a great salad bar). I also like that they play TV in the cafeterias so you can watch sports events or the news (usually CNN)
- The rooms are comfy (especially the beds) and you get amazing views of the tower. -The biggest bonus is not having to clean the shared bathrooms since there is bi-weekly maid service.
-The dorm events also have great free food, so try to go to those!
-It’s pretty easy to meet new people here too. I think most of the foreign exchange students stay here, I’ve befriended kids from everywhere, Mexico, Japan, Sweden! Really cool! - Since it’s located on the drag, you get easy access to all the good drag food and shopping locations (like American Apparel and Tyler’s). It’s also not that far from campus, you cross the street and you’re on campus. Seriously. It’s better distance-wise than Duren or Creekside.
- I prefer Castilian’s study lounge to PCL. It’s much easier to be productive there. Also, there’s a conference room you can book easily for group meetings and it’s MUCH better than the ones at PCL.

Downsides:
- second day after moving in our electricity didn’t work, but that was because of the main power-switched. It was fixed in a day.
- The dorm can get pretty dusty, since it’s carpeted. Bi-weekly cleaning isn’t enough for the dust haha
- It is VERY bright and pretty during the day since the windows are HUGE and sunlight pours in. But at night it can get dim since there isn’t a “main” ceiling light, just strong desk lights and bed lights.
- The water temperature can get annoying at times. Sometimes the hot works better than the cold and vice-versa. I don’t dig the sinks, but they’re not better in any of the other dorms either.
- You have to pay for laundry, and they only take quarters. annoying!

Sorry to bump this but it seemed appropriate, plus this is an ever-growing resource for incoming fish.

About how many people have access to one of the community bathrooms in Jester?
Anybody know?

I am also trying to find out about the honors housing. If you get some info, can you please pass it on.

Seems like your only real choice would be Duren/San Jac, probably Duren (my friend told me Duren is the dorm with the largest number of singles, but I don’t know whether that’s true). I’ve also heard Duren singles are amazingly nice - very expensive, but it sounds like that’s not really a big concern. And sorry about your situation - at this point I’d rather live on the Drag than have to move back on campus.

^ditto on that last statement

I have question I was hoping someone could answer.

I’m a freshman that entered this Spring 2012, and I currently live at home. I’m planning to move into a dorm for this upcoming year. My first choice is going to be Kinsolving. How likely is it to get a room there if I just did my $50 deposit today?

how is San jacinto? is it too loud during the football season?

I’m a freshman majoring in Nursing and I would like to know which dorm is close to my classes. and how close?

when i looked at the campus map, duren and jester are very far away. how far away are they?

To the person who asked about the number of people per community bath in Jester, I’m currently living in Jester East and I’d say about 15 to 20 ish, but because everyone has different schedules it is rare for more than 2 or 3 people to be in it at once. You will never have to wait for a restroom stall or a shower.

christine7, in all honesty, you probably won’t be taking many classes near the nursing buildings or areas or anything your freshman year (since you’ll most likely be in basics), so don’t let that be a deciding factor. Jester is the best location on campus because it’s central, close to the gym, the stadium, and the library. basically, choose a dorm according to other location aspects, not necessarily classes unless you have an insane amount of ap credits whereas you’ll be taking all of your nursing classes already.

How close is Jester to engineering classes? I’m stuck between Jester and San Jacinto and I will most likely get whichever because I deposited my $50 really early (beginning of October)

On a side note, any notable differences between Jester W and Jester E?

Comparing San Jac and Jester?? LOL

You might want to try some of the smaller dorms near jester (Roberts, Moorehill, Prather)

any recommendations or advice for someone who just put down the $50 deposit? I’m nervous!

I’m trying to decide between Prather/Moore-Hill/Brackenridge/and Roberts. I’m going to be a transfer student. What dorms have more sophomores, and what do you know about these dorms?

@azndude3194 Jester East has some floors that are newly renovated as opposed to Jester West. The renovated rooms in Jester East have movable furniture, but I hear less storage and more closet room than Jester West.

It’s PBR, not PMB! I think they both have sophomores, but I thnk Moore-Hill is a lot nicer in terms of rooms and such.

Can anyone suggest which dorm suits me?

-coed, don’t mind community bathrooms
-fairly clean, not smelly (especially the closet) it would be nice if the room is spacious as well
-conveinent to classes/ gym/ library
-food quality= not too big of a concern
-able to make close friend relationships, amiable environment
-not too loud

I’m thininking of either jester or san jancinto. Is San jancinto worth paying more money? I heard that Jester’s closets smell… is that true?? I don’t want my clothes to smell

Or should I go for smaller dorms like Blackridge and prather etc?
