The Wait List

This is very encouraging. (which did he go with? Exeter or Andover?)

@mathmusicmadness‌ - he is currently a senior at Andover.

Thank you @RedSoxFan18

Excellent summary!

Anyone applying this year got waitlisted? Would be nice to share information. My son is waitlisted by Exeter and Andovor. Wonder what would be his chance to get off either

@gemsinhand: Welcome to the forum.

Lots of kids were waitlisted this year (as lots are EVERY year). See this thread for a semi-complete listing of active posters on the forum this app cycle and their results:
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/prep-school-admissions/1748647-the-official-master-list-of-2015-prep-school-decisions.html#latest

Note that the prevailing wisdom is that VERY FEW kids make it off the waitlist for the most selective schools (such as Exeter and Andover).

Thanks SevenDad. Added results to the list. Best wishes

No worries
if you haven’t already, read this thread from the beginning
lots of good input from people who have been there before.

Yikes, I read the entire thread and found out how terribly hopeless my situation is. I always knew it would be an uphill battle, but now it’s not even a hill, it’s a solid himalayan mountain :stuck_out_tongue:
I’m Accepted to none, Waitlisted to both Andover and Exeter, Rejected by SPS. I know the application choices sound icky, but it was the best I could do. My parents weren’t eager to send me to any other schools(that they didn’t know).

I’m a homeschooled student, all A’s(except mid-term grades, there are a few B’s)
International student, from South Korea
97% SSAT and AP bio
Applying for 10th grade, female.

I really do hope the two schools are under-enrolled this year
which is also nearly impossible. I’ll still be trying, though. Hopes for all of you who are trying.

P.S. Do the schools accept new scores such as the SAT subject test? Or would it be inclined too much to the side of sour grapes if I keep sending renewed scores and recommendations?

My kids were never in the limbo-land of W/L, (either accepted or rejected) but it seems like there are some strategies to at least improving your chances to make it off
maintaining contact (but not too much) with your AO is key
as is assuring the schools that if taken off the wait list you will matriculate.

What kind of contact do you recommend to the schools that your child was waitlisted at? Should both the parent and child send letters? Should the parents call?

Does St Andrews ever Reject - or are all Waitlists ‘weasel rejections’ (?GMT7?)?

@MakMacdonald‌ and others on WL
We were in similar WL situation last year. And I’m of the firm belief that it never hurts to show your first choice school that you would absolutely attend if offered admission. I also believe (may be the contrarian opinion) that almost every school will go to the WL (even for just 1-2 spots) in the late spring and summer. I do agree with previous comments that not needing FA is critical factor. PM me if you are able and I can share our family’s experiences with you.

^ that of course depends on the level of under or overenrollment of the school, which depends on the year.

^which is completely up to luck, unfortunately. We can’t estimate the yield rates in advance
they have changed drastically and/or abruptly in the past, and they might change in the future as well as they might not. WL’s called the limbo land for a reason :frowning:

This WL info might be useful to someone
so I’m throwing it out there:

Here’s the drill:

If you receive a WL decision from your first choice school and an acceptance from another school- the steps are pretty simple:

  1. Accept a place on the WL via email with Delivery and Read Receipts.

  2. Schedule a Revisit Day and put the WL school OUT OF YOUR MIND for now. Go to Revisit Day and have a great time.

You’ll have one month for the WL to shakeout and to make a decision about the other school . If you want to go the distance with the WL school ( WITHOUT jeopardizing the other school ) you’ll have until A9. On A8 have your PARENT call the WL school and ask to speak to the DOA. Tell WL school that you have to act on an acceptance from another school before the deadline but you’d like to check WL status ( one last time ) before you do. If they tell you that they’re NOT going to the WL or they don’t expect much movement- thank them and have them remove your name from the WL.

It’s time to MOVE ON unless you choose to stay on the WL. If WL school miraculously does come through ( after A10 ) you’ll have to break your commitment with the other school and forfeit your deposit- which isn’t a mere bag of shells, by the way. Personally, I could never take this route because I’m way too frugal and like closure .

I’m also big on keeping commitments- but that’s just me. So- now we’re one or two days away from the deadline

  1. Now that you’ve given the WL time to play out ( and you can walkaway and never wonder because you’ve seen it through to the end
) : Have your parent call the school ( you’ll be attending ) and tell them the deposit check is on it’s way via FedEx.

The End.

Good luck!!

^^ Definitely good advice from Photog Mom,

Does anybody know if the chances of getting in off the waitlist are higher or lower if you are applying for a day student spot? Does boarding vs day affect the Waitlist chances at all?

Thinking logically, it seems that getting in off the waitlist as a day student would be harder than it would be as a boarder. The yield rate for day students must be a lot higher than boarders, so it would make sense that it would be less of a chance.

OTOH, if one day student drops out, perhaps your chances are higher than that of a boarder.

Seems to me it would be easier to get off the day student WL, since the number of day students is not strictly constrained by the number of available beds. It’s much easier to push another chair around a table than to build another dorm.

I have no idea, but intuitively, I agree with @GMTplus7 . Since you’re not fighting for bed space, it should be easier as a day student. Although if a school is 100% Harkness, I guess classroom capacity could make it a wash.
