The Wait List

Is it important for my parents to call the Admissions Officers at GLADCHEMS schools to find out about movement on the wait list this week? I wrote a letter to express my interest, and know it’s a long shot, but my parents have not called yet the one school I wish to attend. Does anyone know how open AO’s are about what could help an application the following year if you don’t get off the WL and wish to reapply?

(1) No, your parents do NOT need to call. You’re on the waitlist - if a spot opens up, the school will call you.

(2) Yes, you absolutely should contact your admissions officer to ask what you might be able to do to strengthen your application for next year . . . but wait a few weeks before you do.

According to St Andrew’s website,

I expect that we will receive a bulk email soon.

Thanks Dodgersmom that is really helpful. I don’t expect an email as the school I"m waiting for sent letters via USPS, but I’ll wait a few more weeks and call my AO if there is no word before then.

Instead of calling, send an email asking to set up a telephone appointment - this will give the admissions officer a chance to review your file before you talk.

I’m not reapplying, as I’ll have like no time next year in high school… starting extremely time consuming EC’s & not willing to spend another year tired and waiting. But the lessons were invaluable. When (approximately) will most schools close the wait lists?

It’s not a matter of closing the waitlist as it is solidifying the classes for the 2012-13 school year. The schools want to wrap this up sooner rather than later and are already moving on budgets and other issues. I wouldn’t think it would be much longer, a week, maybe. What happens afterwards are totally unplanned issues but not necessarily unforeseen that makes a school resort to the waitlist.
It’s been another tough year and will be for years to come.

It’s kinda weired this year though. Seems like not a lot of people got off the waitlist…a bad year for waitist applicants generally, I would say.

I would agree and I wouldn’t want to get anyone’s hopes up but hey, you never know.

Yeah, you never really know. Chances are tinyyyyy, but hey, anything can happen.

I know a ninth grade boarder off of Choate’s WL several days ago.

My son was WL at PEA and PAA. He accepted a position at Governor’s Academy. April 11 he came off the WL at PEA. He accepted day student at PEA. Hope I can get deposit back from Governors. They were very gracious.

My son just came off the WL at PEA. They called me on my cell phone and expected an answer on the spot. Although I wanted to say yes, I needed to speak to my son first. We were given 24 hours to decide. We accepted!

^^Congratulations!!!

dadofexeter: – very nice that Governors was gracious. The school at which we made a deposit told us if my D was accepted off a waitlist elsewhere we would just have to “eat” the deposit - even if it were just a few days later!

I just heard that PEA accepted more than 15 freshman girls (class of 2016) off their wait list at this point - does that sound correct to you all? Any frosh girls (or guys for that matter) out there accepted off the Exeter wait list?

@dadofviolinist

15 freshman girls sounds really high. I doubt very much that is true. We were told by Exeter that they generally take 0-15 students total off the WL/year. Additionally the fact that they would be all girls in the freshman class would be improbable.

My son was just admitted off of the WL.

If you don’t mind my asking, where did you hear this from? It’s just that I’m on the waiting list too (not for freshman), and I would honestly do anything to get off of it so I guess you could say I’m really anxious to know ANY information.

@dadofexeter
CONGRATULATIONS!! wow that is so exciting!! :slight_smile:
I must say I am VERY jealous but I have no doubt that your son deserves it very much.

If you don’t mind my asking, did he do anything particular to get off the wait list? (You can pm me if you want)

@dadofviolinist Ohmygosh. 15 girls from Class of 2016? No way! Where did you hear this? Ohmygosh. My heart just skipped a beat. I’m freaking out. Where did you hear this??

I have the exact same questions and comments as preplife. But also, do you think it is over-bearing for admissions officers if we called and asked if there is movement and if it is likely that applicants are going to be accepted off the waitlist?
