So I've been wondering this for a while and just now had the sense to post it on here where I could get some quality feedback..my desired field is medical, and I was wondering..will a med school care about your undergrad's name as much as it cares how well you did in said school? Like say you applied for a really prestigious med school, but your undergrad school was just one of your generic state colleges. Will they favor someone who majored in Biology at Berkley versus someone who majored in Biology at OSU (Oregon State University)? (Say in this situation both students maintained a 4.0 GPA and got the same scores on everything).

tl;dr Will colleges (med schools in particular) care about the name of your school when choosing who to accept?

I know you’re talking about med school and not law school, but I enjoy showing this list to people who worry about whether or not they can get into a good grad school.

Thanks for the reassurance! I just had to make sure though! How big of a factor is your schools public reputation when graduate colleges select students however?

Med school admissions is highly numbers driven. This means that your GPA and MCAT score will count for much more than the college/university name on your diploma. Med school is also extremely expensive, and there are almost no scholarships available. Most students pay for med school with loans, and graduate with med school debt of $250k or more. This means that you should be looking for the place that will cost you the least to attend as an undergrad so that you have money left to pay for med school.

Ah thanks for the information! Yeah I’ve heard the horror stories about med. school/law school debt. I’m not too worried about that, I’m sure something will work out. But again, thank you for helping me!
