wow, you only get 6 and a half lines to write about why you like Columbia. Do you guys like just pick a really specific point and talk about it? LIke for example is urban setting. My main concern is that you will be extremely similar to other people's.

specific >> general. generally
do your research, and tell the truth. if you like NYC say it (but NYU is in NYC too), if you like the core, mention that (but other unis like harvard have cores too). I mean, I’m sure most people’s topics will be extremely similar to each other. that’s why specific is good.

ok, do you only have to write about what you liked about Columbia? or do you also have to also talk about what you bring to Columbia? i don’t think we have enough space to do that.
As for being specific, should i go into like specific course/professor/facility kind of specific?

^only answer the question asked.

A good rule of thumb is “something not featured in the pamphlet”. Oh and not the vivacity of NYC. That’s an application killer right there.

I figure mentioning professors’ names would show you did some research and are actually interested.
not nearly enough space to go off on tangents.

do you only have to write about what you liked about Columbia? or do you also have to also talk about what you bring to Columbia?

i’m guessing no?
and what do you mean by tangents?

^^haha wow.

A tangent is when you go off on a semi-related point but end up far away from where you were.

are you a bench warmer for the basketball team?
