I'm starting to write the supplement essays for a couple of colleges, and most of them ask me why I would want to go/apply to the college. All mine are so general. I really want to stand out! Could someone make some GOOD and SPECIFIC reasons why you would want to go to a college?

Colleges I'm applying that need this: Boston Unviersity and George Washington University

-prestigious school
-good program
-good research facilities and job opportunities
-...anything else?? Can anyone post theirs so I can get some ideas?

You are being lazy and are willing to plagiarize. If you can’t come up with a good reason for why you want to go to these schools, then you should not be applying there. Especially after reading the Shadow Scholar, I’m really angry and frustrated at how willing students are to cheat and plagiarize to get what they want. Shameful really.

I don’t know if the OP is being lazy or whether he/she is just being overly concerned about what needs to be said, resulting in a complete writers block. OP, something about these two universities attracted you to them. Stop worrying about what you think would sound best and stand out to admissions and be yourself. When you are yourself, you stand out. You want your essay to sound genuine. You want your personality to come through. You don’t want it to be a hodgepodge of what you think they WANT to hear. Get a piece of paper. Sit down and pretend that your best friend just asked you why you want to go there. Now write. Write without worrying about grammar, length of essay, any of that… When you are done, you can go back and fix that. Write as if you were talking to someone you are really comfortable with. I am sure you will be able to write freely if you just be yourself and take the pressure off. Good luck.

Nothing you posted is specific to those schools, and makes them want to accept you.
They’re thinking freshman yield rate now. At least feign interest in some specialized area of those unis so that they think they have a reason to keep you there. They need to know that they have a hook with you.

Go on their website and find SPECIFIC things that interest you. As in, elaborate on clubs/opportunities/programs that are specific to that school. The best option, though, is to just be honest-- why are you applying to these schools? Plenty of schools are prestigious with good programs so why’d you pick BU and GW? The answer is there somewhere…

I’d agree with what the other posters said. It is a quite difficult essay to write, but keep in mind it shows true interest, and if you know anything about that college or not.
Just imagine you got accepted to both of those schools. How would you pick/distinguish between the two? I’m sure you’d research much more than just saying “Well U.S. News said this one is ranked 2 places higher, so I’d like to go there!”
