lianapark I feel your pain- I have certain phrases I think only midwesterners use, that no one else understands, like our own code langauge- we use brats here as well

celebrian, glad to know that I have an ally in this. Like out east this summer everyone was like, "...what?" It was hilarious, but I was lonely in my diction. :-P

parade.

lol. pride much?

in nj they have weird phrases too...i didn't always live here so when i moved in i must have spent a great deal of time being confused.

example:

NY NJ
purse pocketbook
worksheet ditto

special things that exist only in edison, in my opinion:
"bobo" <-- really dumb. like, the lowest level classes in school are the bobo classes. the first time i heard this i thought it was a dirty word.
"tard cart" <---- really rude term for the special ed bus. usually people pronounce 'tard "tart"

random question:

do you guys pronounce the word "lilac" ly-lawk or ly-lack?

because i always said "ly-lawk" and then we had to sing a song in choir which mentioned lilacs. our director is from the south and he occasionally breaks into his accent, so when i heard him say "ly-lak" i laughed. then my friend told me that everyone around here says it that way and laughed at me for sounding "british."

wow hah. I definitely say ly-lack and whatnot. I never heard it said as ly-lawk. Where did you move from?

When I was switching my British accent to an American one I once said "scarce" like "scar-s" instead of "scare-s" or whatever during a presentation and my teacher was like, "....." and told me I was saying it wrong (among other things...I embarrassed myself plenty during those). And then when I moved from Indiana to Wisconsin they would say "budge" instead of "cut" and "swear" instead of "cuss" it was so weird. Or bubbler instead of water fountain. or know how to say Waukesha. Kind of scary now.
