The zombie thread problem

It seems that lately we’ve had an epidemic of people posting in abandoned threads. Instead of the admins having to monitor posts and lock threads that have risen from the dead, has any thought been given to locking threads automatically after a defined period of inactivity? Or is the system just not capable of that?
