I don’t know. I was so stunned I asked him again…“you only have 20 spots, right?” and he said that they would end up offerring about 35, knowing that 15 will accept other offers.

They did have her GPA which is 3.7, but she had not taken the ACT at that time. She took it the next day and we are still awaiting the results. The representative I spoke with did not tell me a specific minium ACT score, but didn’t seem too concerned. The impression I get is that if the drama departments want you, the academics just don’t matter that much, unless you are talking about an ivy…

When we visited CCM last Spring, we explored the question of whether drama students felt like the “poor step sisters” to the MT students. The answer was “no.” The students felt they were treated equally, and felt they would be viewed favorably once they graduated. It appeared they would have the same type of “exposure” as the MT students. There were plenty of opportunities for students to perform, both at school and in the city. The facilities were great. It seemed as though the CCM drama program was growing in terms of reputation: it will only get better each year. I would not be concerned about it for drama at all! My son has applied, and he hopes he is in the same situation as your daughter!!!

Mammalin,
There is certainly no “stigma”, as you put it, to being a drama student at CCM. Their BFA acting program is very selective; it is just not quite as selective as the MT program. I think that some parents worry that the drama students will be overshadowed by the MT students. I have not found that to be the case. As I said in my earlier post, the two groups of students are not in head to head competition for roles. The drama students are afforded a large variety of plays in which to perform. They are showcased in both Los Angeles and NYC during their senior year. The MT students do their own separate showcase in NYC.

As a parent, the thing that I would most concern myself with is whether or not the school seems to be a good fit for my child. Study the curriculum, pay a visit to the campus, talk with current students, talk with the faculty, sit in on some classes, and see a production. Doing these things will help your D get a sense of what it would be like to attend the school.

Hi all- trying to figure out where I’m applying this year, and I’m really focusing on acting majors (though MT would be wonderful!). I’ve been trying to find schools that had good academic stats and such, and Loyola University Chicago stumbled onto the radar. I read a small mention of people being accepted into their program at the Chicago auditions in Febuary. How’s the program? Is it conservatory style?

I posted this on a “headshot” thread. . .but this one gets more “action.” Should the student’s name be printed on the headshot photo?

Hello,

Saw your post about the headshot - and your comments about NCSA. We haven’t gotten to sending headshots yet - some request you bring them to the audition - but I do remember reading specific instructions on various college websites concerning headshots so I would check each one to see what they require. If they don’t specify, I am planning on putting his name on the back just in case. Can’t hurt. If you are uncomfortable with that, you can always email or call them. Eventually they get back to you!

Headshots usually can be printed with the actor’s name on the front in whatever font he or she prefers.

Anyone going to Pittsburgh for auditions at Point Park or CMU this weekend?

We aren’t headed up to Pittsburgh, but good luck!!!
We did go see Urinetown at Otterbein on Sat. It was fantastic!!! We will be going up there for auditions on Nov. 30th. Anyone else going as well?

My son is auditioning at Otterbein on the 30th.

letsfirgureitout, tell your son to break a leg! We’re all rooting for him. :)

We’re catching Point Park and Otterbein at the unifieds. Are going to Purchase Jan. 26. Anyone going to Purchase Jan 26? We are anxious to hear impressions of Otterbein and Point Park!

My son’s going to Purchase on the 26th, too. Juilliard on the 25th.

Does anyone have any feedback on the drama program at University of Toronto?

I hope your S’s auditions went great at CMU and Point Park this past weekend. I guess we will see you at Otterbein in a few weeks. My D’s high school show is now over, so we get to focus on college again - sigh! It will be nice to have the first audition and get things rolling.

Is anyone out there auditioning for the acting program at the Univ. of Arizona? If so, what have you heard about last year’s retention numbers?

Another question: I noticed that both SUNY Purchase (20%) and NCARTS (50%) seem to restrict the number of out-of-state students. Does this apply to acting admissions? I suspect that NCARTS does, but that the 20% Purchase number is due to the fact that most non-conservatory students are in-state.

briansteffy, I don’t have hard and fast numbers, but I get the same impression as you about Purchase: that most of their non-arts students (non conservatory students) do come from instate. From what I have been able to ascertain, the academic “bar” to get into SUNY Purchase for liberal arts is not the very highest. Does anyone know what the conservatory (BFA in acting) retention rate is?

NotMamaRose: I think you are correct about Purchase. I was struck by the USWN data that suggests that only 48% of students eventually graduate from Purchase, but this is college-wide data, which includes a significant number of liberal arts students. I suspect that he graduation % is much higher for Theater students. I thought that I read somewhere on CC that there is not a ‘weird’ (I never know what is the best way to sematically treat this) cutting system at Purchase. I’ve decided to use the word ‘retention’ as a politically correct and ‘understanding’ alternative to ‘cutting’.

By the way, for those who expressed concerns about my illness, I was diagnosed as ‘clean’ yesterday. I am feeling good, which means that I am now going to have to go here and there with my S to audition. So far, my wife has been carrying the load. She, however, will get him to FSU in Jan. (acting), since she attended FSU in the late sixties, and has not been back since.
We are auditioning at Penn State (BA, Acting), Syracuse, Rutgers, UCONN, and Hartt. We plan to catch Guthrie, Evansville, Otterbein, Purchase, and Utah at Chicago Unifieds, and, if frequent flier miles are left, we will audition with Arizona. We (wife and S) recently visited two LACs; Bennington College and Franklin & Marshall. That’s a lot of submissions. We may break the submission record. In fact, just to increase the probability that there is a home somewhere, we already/will applied to a few non-audition BFA programs: entertaining West Virginia, Buffalo, Marietta, Wyoming, and Montana. I would still like to get a discussion going on programs like the latter ones listed, as there seem to be some hidden gems out there. True, they may not have brand ID, and may not lanunch S/D into an acting career, but they seem to offer great teaching, facilities, and in-program opportunities.
