Theater/Drama Colleges Part 11

tnactorsdad, a poster on the Musical Theater forum, nytheatremom, has a daughter in musical theater at University of the Arts and can address general questions about her acting classes and campus life. I believe the young lady also rooms with a girl in the straight acting program there. I can say that I know that both of these girls LOVE their programs and UArts and cannot imagine being anywhere else. One dad on the MT forum, MichaelNKat, also can talk in detail about the training there. I think he actually did some kind of analysis comparing UArts training in acting and musical theater with that of some other schools as far as contact hours with the faculty, etc. and believes UArts is giving his D the best training for the money. One thing that's cool about UArts is the location (if you have been there, you know what I mean) in the arts district of Philly. It's just fun walking down Broad Street/Avenue of the Arts and seeing all the theaters every few hundred feet. I also know a young woman who goes to Roosevelt for MT and also loves it. It may, for you all, come down to cost/personal taste. Good luck and congrats on your son for having great choices! :)

I know about Point Park because we live in the city, attend their shows, follow their faculty and students in shows in the community, and my son applied there. Yes, it is an urban campus, and, as you know, there is a bit of a distance between the living/classroom space and the theater. However, bus transportation is provided on a regular, frequent basis by the school. I would not worry about safety in the areas in which students would be traveling. And, there are many opportunities for PPU students to see shows in downtown Pittsburgh and surrounding areas.

While we have not looked all that closely at the curriculum, I can say the the faculty at PPU actually work as actors and directors A LOT. And, they are consistently recognized by our theater critics as top notch. Similarly, there are many opportunities for students to perform, starting in their sophomore year. They can audition for PPU shows (and there are MANY) and they can audition for other shows in the area. Local companies love to have the PPU students participate in their productions. A few appear again and again, and we have come to "know" them and, as mentioned above, we "follow" them in their productions; they are quite good.

My son has a couple of friends who attend PPU, in some cases as a first or only choice school and in some cases as a "safety" (i.e., they didn't get offers from preferred programs). They all seem to have settled in nicely and feel they are getting the training they need by teachers who really know the business and do it themselves. PPU has just begun a Master's Level training program for acting, however, and you might want to inquire whether the plan is to have some teaching done by these students. I have no idea whether they have had luck recruiting students for the MFA program yet.

If you have more specific questions, I would be happy to TRY to answer them. Unfortunately, I cannot offer comparisons among the schools you listed as I only know about PPU.

Does anybody know for sure whether SUNY Purchase has cuts or not? I had always thought that they did, but I auditioned on campus and I didn't hear anything to indicate that from the students or the faculty there. Maybe they don't want to tell about it at auditions? They had pictures of their senior class hanging up on the wall there and it seemed like an intitial acceptance amount (I think there were around 20 students) Is that about how many they accept?

My S was specifically told there were no cuts. That is, Purchase does not accept more students than they'd like to train and graduate.

Thanks so much...that was initially my only major qualm about that school...I almost didn't apply because of it.

That's good to hear (about no cuts at Purchase)! Good luck to those still waiting to hear ...

my S auditioned on the last day 2/24 and hasn't heard a thing...........are there still acceptances going out from SUNY Purchase?

I know of at least two kids who got personal phone calls from Purchase at least a month ago and have not heard a peep since then.

thanks for the info. may just want ot contact them and find out when notifications will be going out.

In the "for what it's worth category"...just read a post on facebook that says emerson letters went out Wednesday. No comment made on how they know this...so could just be rumor. Fingers crossed for everyone:)

I auditioned on the last day of Purchase auditions (the 24th or 25th). I haven't heard anything either...what's weird is that the people who posted on having been called for acceptance were called before I (or anyone else on that last day) had even auditioned!! I don't know what to expect from them.
Concerning Emerson, I just got my letter today in the mail-accepted- but I think I heard they've been sending them throughout this week, so they might still be coming.

Blueroses1, congrats on Emerson! As far as Purchase, my guess (and it's only a guess, mind you) is that they do identify students that they wish to accept (and some they wish not to accept!) as they go along through auditions. They then apparently telephone the front runners early on, probably as a way to (I would guess) kindly predispose those kids to the program early. But they certainly had not filled their program at that point if they had more auditions slated! I am sure you will be hearing positive things soon: it sounds as if you are getting in everywhere!!

Hey all, asking for a friend...anyone hear from or know when they will hear from Webster?

I read recently (I think on the Webster thread on the MT forum) that letters were supposed to go out today and/or Monday. We are waiting also!!

Thanks...my son's friend is waiting and asked me to see if ya'll knew. Thanks to CC I'm the "mom in the know":).

Actually, there was a notice of a Webster acting acceptance on the MT forum. It apparently came via a phone call today.

This just in from a friend: Boston University decisions are out ... check your email, which provides a link to the decisions.

Darn, my son did not get into Boston. Oh well, waiting for two more.

NMR thanks for the info on BU. My D will be home soon from a dance competition and I tm'd her to check. She still has 4 schools to hear from. Thank goodness we got the Syracuse letter first!

Called SUNY- Purchase today in hopes to get some word on letter (good or bad) Unfortunately no answer at the department so.............unless they are in the mail won"t know any more than we know now.
