Theater/Drama Colleges Part 11

My D got turned down from the Acting program at SUNY. She received a letter a few weeks ago.

kathy: i am so sorry for your d but i bet she has many other wonderful choices. i am so proud of all our kids because it is amazing that they do what they do for themselves everyday. it's extraordinary and it will make them stronger in the end. please let us know where she ends up.

unmekidd, the decisions came in the mail. unmekidd, have you considered calling Purchase to ask what's up? All of the kids I know who auditioned know if they were accepted, rejected or waitlisted. Best of luck to your auditioner!

notmamarose: thank you for your advice. per this thread blueroses mom called last week as she hadn't heard either. SUNY said they hadn't made a decision on her so I guess I'll see what the week brings. It's my understanding that they have till April 15th to notify my d. Again sincerely, thanks for your good wishes.

has anyone heard from the design/tech department from Purchase? I auditioned Feb 3rd and was told I would know a month from then. It has been close to two. I'm about to have a nervous breakdown!!!!

unmekid- Thanks! He has narrowed his choices to Purchase BFA and UMinn-Guthrie BFA programs. We are visiting both next week. We visited Purchase last month while at the Juilliard weekend, but they were on spring break so really only saw the campus. As it was devoid of people, it looked even more depressing than what I have heard.

I do think the Purchase program has better connections in the industry as the Guthrie BFA is only about 5 years old. The campus and city of Minneapolis seems to be terrific though and the Junior sememster in London is a big selling point.

My son loves NY City so Purchase is still looking good. At this point though I think it will be his gut feeling after spending time on both campuses and in their classes... we will be spending two whole days at each before rendering a decision.

I have seen plenty of informative posts regarding the Guthrie program on this site, but very little about Purchase. We would be happy to hear from either students, alumni, faculty or anyone esle who has info about the pluses and minuses of the Purchase program.

As an aside to those still waiting, I would imagine that as these are such small programs, they have to hear from those accepted one way or the other in order to continue offering slots to those not yet notified. I know UMinn want a decision by 4/15.

garyspaul

Your son has a fabulous choice to make and probably can't go wrong. It's true that the Guthrie is a young program, and connections are strongly in the area of regional theatre. Seems to me[this is not firsthand knowledge though-just from an understanding of the industry]-that students have an excellent chance of working at the Guthrie after graduating-i.e. their upcoming production of Midsummer features actors in every leading role who either graduated from the BFA program or took the Guthrie experience program. Obviously if they didn't cast these grads it would not look good for their program!
Regional theatre does exist a bit separately from the business on both coasts and schools in the NY area probably benefit from being able to bring in pro directors and actors to work with students. It's hard to argue with Purchase's track record when you peruse the success of their grads. On the other hand Mpls is a wonderful city.
The Guthrie program spends so much more time with the students because of the callback weekend it's easier to glimpse what their approach will be like. Harder to tell with Purchase. I would probably try to find a way to talk to an older student if my student was torn between the two, to make the best possible decision.

Finally heard from Hartt...D. accepted for BFA acting!

My son finally heard from his last school. He was accepted to Webster theatre program in Stage management

Congrats to holly's D and Judy's S!

Yes kudos to holly's d and judy's s. you must be thrilled the waiting is over!!!!!

Unmekidd: My S has not heard a word from Purchase either. He emailed them in early March to ask and they emailed back that decisions were being put in the mail that week. That was a month ago. He checked online yesterday and it said that his application was complete and all paperwork was in. Of course that was no surprise, since he applied last November! (Auditioned in February). He is moving forward with his other options at this point, visiting schools and getting ready to send in his deposit money for the fall.

Great news for holly and Judy's kids!

Sylvie....if it were me, I would call Purchase now. I would say that your son was told that decisions were to be mailed in early March and it is now April 8 and he has not received anything and needs to weigh his options as to where to enroll. It could be that something was mailed and you never received it. Or maybe they didn't mail it. I would get to the bottom of it and ask someone to look up his file rather than the generic "decisions were sent" and if something was sent according to their records, ask to have it resent and that in the meantime, you want an email decision given that it is now April 8.

sylvie: well we can empathize because my d is in the same boat. i did read upthread somewhere that SUNY P has till April 15th to send out decisions. Another mother commented that she called SUNY P last week and they told her they have not made a decision yet on her daughter. While it is tempting to call, I feel that I am going to give them the extra week that they seem to need before they make their final decisions. In the case of my d, she does not want to send out anything until she hears from SUNY P because this is her first choice. Won't you be glad when all this is over. For All posters on this thread--- green apple martinis at our house when this is done! hehehe

jbinca- thanks for your post. I think you are correct in that we need more input from Purchase students, but they must be too busy with school as I have not been able to find them out there, and believe me, I have looked!

I'll give you all a report on our impressions after our visits next week.

Someone should called the department at Purchase and ask for contact info for current students and/or alums. Maybe faculty, too. Usually programs are very willing to provide that kind of info, especially to students thay have already admitted, and if they're not--well, that tells you something!

It might also be worth seeing if there is a facebook group for the actors admitted to Purchase last year, or at least a facebook group for Purchase actors.

These posts make me wonder if some schools-maybe Purchase and Fordham-are finessing their acceptances instead of using wait lists. Waiting to hear from their first tier acceptances-then moving on to the next on the list, without telling them they were wait listed. Who knows what procedures might make their job easier. One reason this has occurred to me after reading these posts-when my daughter was accepted to Purchase several years ago she was called at home, more than once-they clearly wanted an answer asap. Perhaps they worry that wait listing a student will cause that student to lean toward another acceptance-and then they might lose top wait list choices? Or maybe I'm overthinking this!
And accepted students should definitely be given a contact with an older student to ask questions about the program.

Are there still acting students waiting to hear from Fordham? I admit I don't know a ton of kids who auditioned there, but I know four or five of them, and they all have had their decisions by now.

unmekidd, if Purchase said by April 15, then that is different and I would not call yet. I was going by sylvie's post and what she was told about the decisions going out in March and so that would more of a reason to call as it would appear as a mix up of some sort but now it sounds like not all decisions have gone out and so ya gotta wait it out.
