Our decision has been made. My d will attend University of Minnesota in the fall. This opens up a spot at Rutgers and SMU for anyone on those waitlists. Good luck to those still waiting to hear.

mom1234, congrats to your D! Guthrie is a great program.

My S stayed up last night trying to choose between Muhlenberg and Emerson Colleges. It was a long and painful process. He LOVED both programs!!!! He was accepted in the BFA acting program at Emerson and thought the faculty was amazing...YET...There was something amiss with his feelings for the school. He could not express it. He really wants the opportunity to study the classics, Shakespeare and some comparative literature, while still having a strong conservatory approach to the study of acting. That is why he loves Emerson so much...BUT He also wantsto continue voice classes to keep his instrument strong. When he asked administration about the quality of the liberal arts courses he was told that they were as "challenging as he makes them."..and he could schedule voice lessons outside of the program if he could fit them in his schedule. Even though Emerson has the name and the intense acting program, he felt that that alone wasn't enough. He would have to work too hard at "making it work" for what he wants whereas Muhlenberg has it all there...classics, voice, dance and drama.
He is sick about it but hopes he made the right decision. He feels like he through away an opportunity that others would kill for....I told him..he needs to follow his heart and his gut. College is about experiencing and exploring ALL avenues of interest. Everyone on this board has been very supportive with each other within the decision process. I hope his was the right choice.

Dear Lady Mac,
Your son is clearly an independent thinker who will fare well. It is wonderful that he is able to sort out what is right for him and take that path. He will be a huge asset at Muhlenberg, which will indeed, I think, offer him what he is looking for. Give him a hug and don't look back - He's on the right track.

Lady Mac, your son is going to love Muhlenberg. He can do it all there, and the culture of the school is so, well, nice! If you haven't visited, do so. My D and I were so impressed during our two visits with how civil the kids were: they actually stopped to hold the doors open for us when coming in and out of the buildings. In addition, the production of Tennessee Williams's Orpheus Descending we saw there was top notch. Best of luck to your son. He's gonna love livin' in Allentown (to slightly rephrase the Billy Joel song.)

Wow!! Where did everyone go???

I've been wondering the same thing. Lots of parents over on Facebook--Parent of Theater Kids. I'm just learning over there, and I've forgotten my password twice. . .but you might want to have a look.

Also, all the action has moved over to the Musical Theater threads, even for non-MT acting. That's where I've been hanging out!

I have been prowling the MT threads for ages and have tried a couple of times to get engaged in the information over here. Although someone has done a great job of breaking the information into Parts, overall this format is not as user friendly as the MT threads. You have to wade through pages of posts on various topics such as cut policies, good schools, unifiedes, waitlists and acceptances. Yes, you can use the search function for a specific topic, but doing this disables you from seeing topics that you had not thought of. Perhaps Theatre/Drama has outgrown this general presentation. Please understand that I am very grateful for your hard work creating the Parts. Just thought that this might be contributing to why everyone is "hanging out" over at MT. Has anyone ever considered following the same model employed on the MT space so that information is readily accessable by topic/school?

It also is hard to separate out the visual arts from theater. The above post brings up some great points. Some schools/programs discussed on the MT thread would be more appropriately placed here: BU, NCSA. and Guthrie for example, as they do not offer MT. And, is there ANY information on dance?

My s is going to go to NCSA. I'd love some more info on how their students do after graduation and in summers and what they do for fun. Still wondering if he made right decision, I'm starting to get concerned about future employment now that the trauma of college acceptance is over - is there a cc thread where parents/students talk about how things are going once in a BFA program? Also, anyone know, do NCSA kids hang out in Winston Salem, what do they do? Is a car a must?

As some of you know, I've also been using the MT forum because it's so easy to follow. I know someone inquired before, but has anyone heard where Brian Steffy's son decided to go? I just wish him the very best and know that he auditioned at at least one of the same schools as my D.

Congrats, hampton, on your son's decision. I think I have posted previously that a number of actors from my D's high school end up at NCSA most years, and at least one of her friends is going from this year's senior class, though several were offered admission. Several grads also have come back to speak. They have great things to say about the training, but also often complain that there isn't much to do for fun and that the school is kind of stuck in the middle of nowhere. (I am sure folks from Winston-Salem would dispute that, so I am just passing along what was passed to me!! :)) From what I have heard, BFA students are so busy anyway that they don't have much downtime to fill. It's a fantastic program and I am sure your son will do well. Congratulations again!

Congrats Hampton on your son's acceptance to NCSA-my daughter attends NCSA and it is an incredible almost magical place. Top notch teachers! As far as post collegiate hopes, as with any BFA program the students are going into a very competitive profession. The alumni are great about helping the graduates network, and of course their senior showcase is well received by agents and casting directors. The alumni come back once a year to talk about what they are doing now, and my daughter said most are employed in the business.
We too are concerned about what will happen when D graduates, as is she, so she is taking a few courses this summer, but that's just her, as she has many interests.
During the week they are very busy, with studies and first years have crew, so they are busy many weeks til late doing crew, and many times on weekends til late hours too. There are several places they hang out at in Winston-Salem, but most of the time they have get togethers with other students. It is a very small and close knit community so it doesn't take long to make friends and get to know your classmates.
A car is good to have if at all possible. I would strongly suggest having one.

Best of luck! Feel free to ask if you have any other questions!

Well ... I'd been kind of hoping someone would take the initiative and start setting up new threads, but I suppose I can start a Part 12 if y'all would like. Forty seven pages? LOL Just say the word.

Fish:

Word...

:D

(I so appreciate your setting it up with the links to past threads/future threads, etc.)

No prob. Easy as "voila." :)

Theater/Drama Colleges Part 12

Maybe someone can get the moderator to close this one out and past the new one up on top of the forum.

Thank you fishbowlfreshman for setting this up.

Part 12 will now be stuck at the top of this forum and featured as well. At the start of Part 12, fishbowlfreshman has provided the links to Parts 1-11 for anyone who wants to read through the archives.
