My son has fallen in love with all aspects of Technical Theater (not acting). However, he has always been exceptional in science and math, and that is what we thought he would study. But now he insists on Theater Tech.

We are trying to find programs similar to Carnegie Mellon's Bachelor of Science and Ats program. Apparently it is not realistically possible to study both Engineering and Theater, because an Engineering program takes up too many courses.

Does anyone know of another alternative to CMU (don't want to put all eggs in one basket), so he still studies a science or math curriculum, as well as the Theater Tech (which is also a difficult program to find)?

I don’t think Engineering and Tech Theatre are incompatible. IF you look at tours like Cirque du Soleil and many others, the majority of their technicians have engineering degrees in order to use the latest stuff.

As someone who seriously considered a career in tech theatre(and who lives an hour from CMU-granted i’ve always liked Point Park better…also CMU has a ridiciously low admit rate for a BFA…its nearly impossible), i think i can give some decent advice.

Let your son do his undergrad in Engineering and a minor in Theatre(doesn’t have to be tech). This can easily be done in a LAC like Union College or a Uni like Pitt. Then, he can apply for his MFA and do advanced theatre work there. I know Yale MFA looks favorably at engineers applying.

OR, at a place like Point Park(i’ll admit my bias towards this school), he can do a Engineering major and a TECH theatre minor, or maybe even double. they are VERY flexible. It’s worth looking at…
