Theatre at NU

hollywood diva, i've typed a response to your question about whether my son likes NU twice and lost it both times. not sure what's going on (I'm using a different browser -- Firefox -- and am having trouble with certain sites).

Bottom line is he LOVES NU, was called back for several shows (they audition for several at once but are only cast in one), got a semi-lead with one song in one of them, and is writing music he hopes will be chosen for the big annual Waa Mu show. If I can answer any questions, just ask and if I don't know the answer I'll ask my S.

The latest AMTP show -- Ashpalt Beach -- was AWESOME!!! Very professional and hysterically funny. It's in the planning for a movie next year with Kristen Chenoweth and Parker Posey.

edmondsg...is your son going to audition for the certificate program? And would you mind asking him (if you don't know) what he thinks of the lack of acting classes your freshman year?
Hopefully I will me joining your son next year! (fingers are very crossed for december 15). And also, after reading some of your posts from last year, what was the reason that your son chose NU over CAP21? Thanks!

typecastme22 - yes, he's definitely going for the MT program in the spring. Rumor has it that NU is working towards making MT a full degree program, which would be great. I'll ask him tomorrow when I see him how he feels about the lack of acting classes freshman year (he's posted here a few times regarding the NU summer program - his screen name is ‘offkey’), but my guess is he's going to say that he's so busy with so many other theater and music related activities, he doesn't really miss the acting classes. The 'voice for performance' class, tech classes, private voice, an MT intro class he was invited into when he auditioned for private voice, show auditions, music composition, show rehearsals, and his acappella group all keep him extremely busy.

Regarding why he chose NU over CAP21, it was really a hard choice for him, but there were a few reasons. One was the AMTP program at NU -- it's along the same lines as CAP21's, but NU's is new and getting a lot of attention, and will be a great opportunity to get to know top-notch writers and composers, equity actors, and others associated with these professional productions. Another reason is that NU is driving distance for us; NYU isn't. Because the tuition for both schools is so high, it mattered to us that we'd save money in travel costs at NU. It wasn't a huge factor, but was one consideration. A big influencing factor was that he had spent 7 weeks at NU the summer before his senior year in high school as a "cherub" in the Theatre / Musical Theatre summer program, and it was a life-changing experience for him. He so appreciated everything about that program and the school, it put a positive spin on NU when he it came time to consider colleges. The thing that tipped his decision in the end was meeting with the Theatre Director and really clicking with him – he’s a warm, charismatic person who, coincidentally, has a daughter who also attended the summer program and is now a freshman at NU. He completely won us over talking about the two highly reputable MT directors they’ve just hired, NU’s famous theatre alumni, and the AMTP program.

If you’d like to chat with my son, PM me and I’ll give you his AIM screen name. Good luck with December 15!

One other NU/NYU comparison, that wasn't so important to him, but might be for some... the fact that NYU has no college campus, really, and NU's is beautiful, on a gorgeous lake, in a nice upscale city (Evanston), and 20 minutes from Chicago, the 2nd largest theater city in the U.S.

On the question about being in more than one show at a time...

You cannot act in two shows at once, because rehearsals are all essentially at the same time. After callbacks, you fill out a "pref sheet", listing your preference for the shows you got called back for (For example, if you got called back for Show A and Show B and would rather be in Show B, you would pref that show first). Starting late last year, the mainstage productions also confer with student theatre, so you really can audition for everything without fear of getting cast in two places at once.

However, you can WORK on two shows at once, although I would not recommend it. I've definitely been acting in a show while Assistant Producing another, thus causing me to have two back-to-back tech weeks. And I'm currently Stage Managing one show and Producing another at the same time, but this is only recommended to vampires and the truly insane. However, NU students somehow manage to do this to themselves all the time, so if you're a theatre nut, it's easy to overdose. :)

And on the lack of acting class freshman year...

While I LOVE LOVE LOVE my acting class now and am so happy to be taking it at last, I can honestly say I didn't miss it that much last year. All three of the required classes (Theatre in Context, Voice for Performance, and Analysis of Performance) require some performance, and thanks again to student theatre, I was definitely kept busy and given some chances to act. In fact, alot of what I learned on my own and from other students last year has informed some of the work I do in Acting and has ultimately helped me to get more out of it. And of course, I was still taking voice and dance classes all last year, and even a circus class during the spring quarter, so I still got a chance to get on my feet during the day. :)

On another note, I also love all the opportunities for different forms of theatre both at NU and in the area. From circus class in Evanston, to Creative Drama, Children's Theatre, Storytelling and Performance Studies classes at school, there's an amazing spectrum of 'theatrical offerings'.

Wow thank you so much for all of the information!
I am very glad that I decided to apply early now. Hopefully it will all work out!

haha you theater kids are great! I'm working my butt off in the science dept as a bio major right now, and it's always cool to see NU kids excelling in other areas. good job!!

WOW, edmondsg, thank you so much for the info...the thing about the movie=amazing.

It sounds like I would truly love Northwestern! Aah!

OH, and rocketpixy, thank you so much for the info as well!
