Theatre & Dance’s Theatre Audition/Scholarship Day

DS17 is going. I was wondering if anyone has gone to this before or if someone else is going to?

I just did a quick search in the main FB parent groups and didn’t see any mention, but it sounds exciting: http://theatre.ua.edu/ba-programs/program-auditions/

Please let us know how it goes for your son, @MichiganGeorgia. And break a leg!

@MichiganGeorgia DS might do this one in the fall for non-majors. http://theatre.ua.edu/all-auditions/season-auditions/

The college rep for UA is going to be at high school this week and he was going to ask about it.

@MichiganGeorgia, not sure if your son is interested in theater or dance, specifically, but he might want to check out the Blount Scholars Program (previously the Blount Undergraduate Initiative) too. Cornelius Carter, the Faculty member in residence at Blount Hall, is from the Dance Department.: http://theatre.ua.edu/profiles/cornelius-carter/

This video explains the program really well: https://blount.as.ua.edu/about/description/

The College of Engineering has its own theatre ‘troupe’, called CDA (College of Engineering Does Amateur Radical Theatre). Despite its title, many students outside of Engineering are in this group and regularly perform, without the commitment that being a Theatre major might. They produce full-length plays as well as host improv nights. They have a FB page (closed, I notice, tho), as well as announcements on UA website. See here for more info and contact info: https://ua.collegiatelink.net/organization/coedoesart/about

We are back from the day. I thought it was worth going to, Everyone was very nice and they were able to answer a lot of questions. They are going to start offering a BFA in Theatre in 2018. They said that any kids who start in 2017 should not behind if they change from the BA to the BFA. Also the new Theatre building was approved on Thursday. It is supposed to cost 100 millions dollars and I think he said 4 years to build. Overall I was very impressed. They did say a lot of kids double major and I think that’s probably what DS would do.

The renderings of the new performing arts center look amazing. It will be really beautiful.

^^ Wow!

This will be such a wonderful addition to campus. So much pain for so many years on those grounds (formerly the location of Bryce Mental Hospital, now it will be filled with beauty and inspiration.

I hadn’t realized that we had UA grad Michael Luwoye performing as alternate lead in Hamilton. Here’s his story.

Here is my experience about double majoring in theater and something else. Its an individusl decision so this isnt to try to sway anyone just to give information to help aid the decision…

I have one student in the theater program and one in musical
Theater. Double majoring as a regular theater Major isn’t too hard. For MT there are so many more required classes that double majoring in anything except dance is tricky. Double in dance isn’t too bad because there are so many required dance classes anyway

At least up the last time I looked, the MT class requirements aren’t listed in the catalog. If accepted in the program the department head emails the requirements for the 4 years including the specific classes to take fall spring freshman year.

Also there are also fees based on which college you are a part of so those go up. If not on Full tuition scholarship the tuition costs of the additional hours is big bucks as well.

Both of mine came in with 40-50 dual enrollment/Clep credits and they still take 18-20 hours per semester to graduate in 8 semesters with double majors.

Both mine are enjoying their theater experiences and life at UA. As with most things - the more you put into something the more you get out of it!
