There's hope for promising students with low gpas

So I am a rising freshman at NYU and I just wanted to share my situation with those who are going to enter the admissions cycle this coming fall. I had a very tough start to high school. My GPA freshman year was about a 2.0 and sophomore year it was a 2.3. I’ve always been smart i was just dealing with a lot and was very unmotivated. The summer before my junior year my father told me I should start looking at colleges. Ive always been ambitious and the realization that I might have to go to a school that didnt fit me really scared me straight. My junior year I really got down to work and got a 3.9 and also signed up for 4 APs for senior year. I also studied extremely hard for the SATs and got a 2160. But still i went into the admission cycle with around a 2.6-2.8 cum GPA. And I applied to mostly top 50 colleges so I worried about my chances. I must stress I worked very hard on my applications to convey my story. THIS IS ESSENTIAL IF YOUR GRADES ARE NOT IDEAL. I feel my essays really pushed me over the edge at some schools. Also I mostly applied regular so they could see I was doing well in all my APs and I could handle the work. This is also important. Anyway I ended up getting into 7 of the 12 schools I applied to and waitlisted at 3. I got into schools such as UMiami, Case Western, UPitt, Lehigh and obviously NYU. Schools people and CC kept telling me were impossible. So I just want all the kids who didnt do so well to know that it really isnt to late to shape up and still get into a great school! Im very happy with my admissions decisions and im very happy for all the work I’ve put in these past few years! It can be done!

Impossible is a word, but you did a great work that beat the words of others. Congratulations on your acceptances. Hope is the last thing we lose.

That’s great!

What about students like me that struggle? I just finished my freshman year in a CC with a 3.04. I’m planning on applying to Penn state this Fall.
