Things to Bring

I've been wondering what Navy does about cell phones that play music on them? Do you have to get a different phone?

The running shoes have to be the ugly white new balance ones right? or can you bring your own running shoes for PEP?

TXinAk, from what I've heard and read you can bring your own running shoes as long as they are mostly white? Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Thats a really good point. Obviously theres no ipods, but now that some phones have basically become ipods, that may be a great way to sneak your music into Bancroft... Either that or the upperclass may inspect all cell phones for music, in which case you'd better delete it before they do... You should be able to bring your own shoes as long as their mostly white. The long answer is that it technically depends on the company, however I never have heard of a company not allowing your own shoes. As far as the NB shoes being ugly, thats the least of your worries. New Balance actually makes excellent running shoes. In particular I remember their trail shoes were always rank near the top by magazines like runners world. The biggest worry with using the NB shoes is that they won't be broken in.

Hmmm....
well, some things come immediately to mind.

Honor system.
Then again, "you rate what you skate."

Best advice:
follow the rules.
And if you decide not to, don't get caught.
And just when you think there will be no way you will be or could be caught, just remember one thing: you will be.

So your call.
Just remember-
break the rules=demerits=minor or major infractions=no weekends or walking tours at best, get a ticket for seperation at worst.

You decide.

Running Shoes: you can bring your own for plebe summer, but they should be mostly white in color. You will be issued new ones on I-Day.

**Boots: **according to those kay-dets up on the Hudson, the only place you will be marching to is Nordstroms, so no need to break them in. ;)

*Ugly running shoes: * just wait 'till you see the tighty whities!!! ;)

Don't play music on your cell phone, because I guarantee it will be obvious.

It is one more way to get your cell phone taken away (which would be a shame) and easy way to corner yourself into an honor offense.

2/C X heard 4/C Y listening to music. 2/C X approaches 4/C Y asking him/her what he/she was doing on the cell phone. 4/C Y says talking on the phone.

It is easy to say that it won't happen to you, but it is much easier to fall into this scenario.

Everyone I know in my ocmpany and other ones, have had their phones checked. Especially the iPhones. No matter how much you say that you only listen to it on liberty, do keep it on there. Just don't have an mp3s on any phone. I have the clips on mine, and no one really cares that it rings music.
Those ugly shoes are the worst things ever!!! They were awful for my type of foot and I've heard that from others too. Those white new balances are terrible for some, unfortunatly you have to wear them all the time, to do PEP you get your own shoes, the all white thing doesn't actually matter, they're not going to take away your shoes, besides you only wear them to PEP. And the gray NBs they give you suck too. And they're $95 shoes that I gave to my mom because by the end I hated them, we had to wear those for MPT, and they suck too. Killed my feet. :(
Oh and underwear, that ugly crap they give you just falls apart. i wore white underwear on I-day and had my mom send me more comfortbale quality stuff. I think all of my friends did to. The stuff they had was so cheap!

EYEGLASSES
One additional word - Bring your civilian eyeglasses along too in case the BCG's are not ready. My mid did not get her BCG's until halfway through plebe summer (not that she minded).

Yep, yep on the white underwear. Son had me send all white, no markings on the bands men's boxer sport briefs. Hard to find? Yes, yes, yes.

Found them at Target. Men's section, made exclusively for Target, 3 in a pack $5.99. Not the loose cotton boxers but the stretchy sport brief ones that come down a little lower on the thigh but all white. Have stock-piled those for the next 3 years! Also all white short sleeve under armour shirt, again hard-to-find but works ok.

Kat

ps and cell phone with NO music and 2 sets of his "own" glasses. Broke his first pair and needed the 2nd before Christmas break.

So are mids allowed to have clothes that are not issued? I thought they were only allowed the issued gear...Also, my grandfather bought me a blue Navy hoody when we were there this summer. I have only wore it once, when I got my acceptance letter. It's not issued persay, but its Navy gear, so is that something I could wear after Plebe Summer?

So it seems like I'm on here a lot today but I'm procrastinating like whoa, when I really shouldn't.
Yes, you can have non-issued gear such as underwear, undershirts ( not really needed), sports bras, shoes etc. But when it comes to non-issued outerwear stuff, nope. Can't have it until plebe year is over. You can have it in your room, because it says Navy or USMC on it, but it's considered spirit gear and can only wear it at certain events. Plebes have to wear issued PE gear/uniforms/or team gear. Next year you can wear it.

Thanks for the advice on the cell phone- I really wasn't planning on listening to music, I was just wondering. :)
I was also reading on the WP forum that they get something called bristley heat or something ( don't remember exactly) from under armour during the summer and apparently its awful. Has anyone at USNA had experiences with brands that don't work well for the climate?

REALLY, if you are dying to bring something, just bring what is recommended. You don't even need to bring that.

WOW! this is just like that guy used to post--the swallows of Capistrano or something like that--are returning. Same questions every year!

You'll be fine.
But if your mom is looking for sometehing to worry about, have her fuss over the dental x-rays, passport, etc.
Underwear?

The Alumni Association & Foundation site has a "Parent Survival Guide" in the parent section.

This other site has some information regarding what to bring, what to expect, etc.:
USNA-Net Parents Handbook

lol...that would be our "Bill!"

Umm, on my I-day, they took your bag within half an hour, and you don't see it until your cadre pass it out like a day later. They tell you to take anything out you want, but don't take your cell phone, ipod, civilian clothes, or anything like that. Bring your own bible if you want, I don't see the big deal, it's not like you'll be hauling that around all day anyways, you'll be carrying all the crap your issued, not your personal belongings.
