thinking about cutting a live person open makes me nervous

I am a high school sophomore right now but I feel like I would be really freaked out cutting someone open right now. Is this something that I just shouldn't have or are most people like this but they get over it after taking biology classes and going through med school?

The earliest you could possibly expect to “cut a live person” in a controlled medical setting would be medical school. Why are you worrying about this as a high school sophomore?

I’m actually surprised. I think most people worry about dissecting cadavers.

It’s not a natural inclination for most people.

You’re HS soph, can you even drive yet? Why are you even worried about this? You’re at about a decade away from being in a position where you’ll even have this sort of opportunity…this is by far one of the most ridiculous things you could be worrying about right now.

You see, this is a highschool student that wants to base his life on what he thinks makes the most money. So he thinks the medical business, now he thinks, what makes the most money, oh yeah a surgeon, they make 300,000+ a year, i could buy a Lamborghini with that! Eeeew, but wait, i don’t want to cut someone…

What most people do is that they just shut their eyes right when they make the cut, this way, you don’t have to see anything, and your partners can tell you weather to cut higher or lower?

There, now you got the answer that you wanted. Just enjoy your highschool life.

oh, well i’m sorry if you didn’t expect to hear from high school students with questions about med school and being a doctor even though you were in the Pre-Med & Medical School: high school student forum. Also the question wasn’t about whether I could do surgery without looking it was could I learn to deal with that or is it something that you are born with, being able to cut someone open and take out their kidney without being nervous, or if it is something that you will have to try and eventually develop the ability to not be scared doing that. Also I have reasons of wanting to be a doctor other than the money. Correct me if i’m wrong but I don’t think the criteria for being a doctor is “likes to cut things open and take out organs”, not sure if it’s just me but I think they should have other reasons.

It wouldn’t say it’s natural for anyone to want to cut up live people, but I’d think that it’s a job done by people that are confident enough to overcome this obstacle. You can’t let your nerves and fears affect the way you perform the surgery, so if it’s something that you decide you can’t do as you go through training and in med school, then it’s not the right job for you.

I’m pretty sure not all doctors cut people open to take out organs that often; that’s what a surgeon does.

So then why are you worrying about it? Plenty of doctors have never cut any live people open.

No, it’s a requirement to like taking out organs and stitching up the case… er patient. And bench pressing too. If you can’t lift 350 then your best going off and hanging out with those nurses in long white coats in the ICU.
