Thinking about interior design career.. Is this a good idea?

How stable is the career field? Is it a good career to get into if you love to decorate interior spaces?

My plan is to go to a community college for 2 years and get an AA (since my grades in high school weren't the best) and take some interior design courses and then transfer to some other college that has interior design. If I did that would the community college curriculum be too weak and leave me unprepared for the college I transfer to?

Also, how hard is it for one to support one self with a degree in interior design?

I used this site to figure out some pretty useful statistics for my major (I’m in engineering.):
[Interior Designers : Occupational Outlook Handbook : U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics](http://www.bls.gov/ooh/arts-and-design/interior-designers.htm)

I don’t claim to know anything about interior design, but I really doubt it’s one of the more stable/well paying careers available. I’m under the impression from things I’ve seen on google that many interior designers only have an associate’s degree, so I’d doubt you’d be behind when you transferred.
However, there’s a decent connection to architecture. Maybe look at that or (civil?) engineering as well?
Best of luck!

In the end, just do what you love!

A designer friend recently told me that many people use the terms “interior design” and “interior decorating” interchangeably, though they are really very different careers. Maybe this link would be helpful in your early stages of thinking about the field:

[Differences Between Interior Design & Decorating: NCIDQ](http://www.ncidq.org/aboutus/aboutinteriordesign/differencesbetweeninteriordesigndecorating.aspx)

Best wishes!
