Thinking about Pre-Calculus over the summer...

Okay, so I'm currently a Junior taking Algebra II Accelerated. I want to move up to Precalculus Honors next year, but I would need to take Pre-Calculus over the summer at some community college. My teacher said it would be impossible for me to jump into Pre-Calculus Honors next year because it covers trigonometry, which I have not done in Algebra II yet, but I have been exposed to some trigonometry in Physics Accelerated this year/Geometry Accelerated last year. What are some options for me?

bump…

I took precal without being exposed to Trig before, other than the stuff we did in geometry. I think you would be fine without the trig, though even people with a foundation in trig had trouble with some of the things we did in precal last year. Most of the stuff doesn’t even have anything to do with trig.

Weird, I honestly don’t remember doing any trig stuff at all in Alg II. I did some basic trig stuff in 9th grade geometry. It was just SOH CAH TOA. That was it. Although by the time I got to pre calc i didn’t even remember any trig. So I taught myself the basics again. You don’t really even need to know trig very well. If you know SOH CAH TOA, then the rest of the trig stuff you learn in precalc is pretty easy. So you’re fine taking precalc over the summer since you’ve already been exposed to it in physics. However, even though trig may be simple to learn, there are other topics that may be harder. So don’t think it’s going to be a piece of cake learning precalc in a period of 3-4 months.

Ugh… I don’t think I would be in this situation if I had doubled up in math during my Sophomore year. I moved to a new high school during my Sophomore year, so I did not know that I could double up in Geometry and Algebra II. In hindsight, I would have done that and I would be in Pre-Calculus right now and take Calculus during my senior year.

The reason why I want to move up to Pre-Calculus Honors is that it will help with my weighted GPA. From my Freshman to Junior Year, the only honors courses I had taken were Latin II H, U.S. History II AP, and Latin III H. I actually want to challenge myself next year… even though “Senioritis” is inevitable.

I was also recommended for Functions Honors during my Freshman year of high school, but I turned down that option because I didn’t want to challenge myself too much… and now I think that was a dumb choice too…
