Thinking of writing about Star Trek in my personal essay and/or Why Reed essay?

Hi! So I'm going to be applying to several LACs, including Reed ED, so I'm trying to show off some of my personality in the essay - and I want to write about Star Trek and how much its philosophy has shaped me. Since I'm not American (I'm Uzbek), I wanted to sort of touch on how its ideologies of unity and whatnot inspired me, that not only the people of Earth can get along, but other planets as well.
& given Reed's emphasis on education, I feel like it's very relevant.

It's going to touch on these sorts of points:

"It’s the belief in a better and brighter future for humanity.

It’s about building up from a horrific past of a war-torn world to create a beautiful future in which hunger and poverty no longer exists.

It’s about unity - making friends and alliances across the galaxy with a diverse set of cultures, from human to Klingon to Cardassian.

It’s about recognizing the value of life even when it looks so different from anything we know - silcon-based, artificial intelligence, etc.

And it’s about being the best person you can ever possibly be.

It’s about learning Latin when you’re in the Academy to be an Engineer.

It’s about keeping up with the humanities while you’re surrounded by the most advanced science we can conceive.

It’s about striving to be something greater, something perhaps it would be impossible for you to ever obtain, because it’s the journey that’s more important than the destination.

It’s about progress - in equal parts scientific and humanitarian. "

Obviously I'm not going to go super in-depth, but I feel like it shows my personality, learning style, ideals, and what I want out of college very effectively. I don't want to sound like a special snowflake or something, but I'm also a girl who likes Star Trek and looking to go into physics, and that's pretty rare as of today. (also something I want to touch on in the essay)

Is this a good idea at all? I have no experience with the common app essay/college essays and I'm not entirely 100 percent sure what it is so any help would be lovely. Thanks!

I think that if you can pull it off, it will make for a creative, different, and memorable essay.

I think you want to be sure to show how it has shaped you. My D did something kind of like that… but hers was about Sherlock Holmes. She discovered Holmes at an early age, and wrote her essay about attempting to emulate him and what she thought he would think of her life choices to date. She got in everyplace she applied, too (placed like U Chicago, Swarthmore, etc.). So I think it is great to talk about how it influences your thinking on what you want out of college – but if you have specifics about how it has influenced you already in specific choices you have made, that is also something admissions committees like.
