This Is Us. Anyone watching?

But then Kevin just shows up in NJ from Pittsburgh to help Randall with the apt building??

Hahaha.
Much like our good friend from Pittsburgh who thinks nothing of dropping by unannounced to visit at our house in northern NJ.

Think it’s a 4-5 hr ride depending on how fast you like to drive.

I said Philly but meant Pittsburgh. But, yeah, East Coast geography isn’t my thing, and I also can’t keep track of where everyone is.

@abasket The apartment building is in Philadelphia, not NJ. It’s about 4 hours. I think Kevin is also staying with Randall on and off in NJ, which is close to Philly.

Trenton NJ has been mentioned twice. Once in the episode with the Indian guy in the hardware store and also in the episode where Randall and Beth bought the apartment building. Trenton is about 40 minutes from Philly.

I would like to note that I am in Philadelphia, it’s January 26, 9 days before the Super Bowl, and it’s beautiful and sunny outside. The temperature is in the mid-30s now, but supposedly high 40s or low 50s by the afternoon.

You can’t count on weather like that here in late January/early February, but it’s far from uncommon. In fact, you can count on having weather like that a bunch of the time, you just can’t predict which days it will be and which days will be frigid and snowy.

Of course, @“Youdon’tsay” may have meant Pittsburgh, not Philadelphia. It’s definitely somewhat colder there than here. But I assume the sun shines there, too.

ED acceptances come out mid-December.

That, too. Kate sailed out the door without any kind of jacket, or even a sweater!

My point was do you know what early admit programs NYU back in the 90s or whenever that episode was placed in time? Some schools do have early action programs that come out in Jan/Feb now. I don’t know enough about 90s admissions, specifically NYUs, to say it couldn’t happen. I just didn’t assume it was the same timing as what is common in this decade.

From what I have read, the writers of the show take a lot of effort “to get things right.” They talked with eating disorder experts with respect to Kate and Madison. They brought in people from Backdraft to film the house fire scenes (Ron Howard probably could introduce them if not help himself now that filming for the WWII movie starring Kevin seems to be done – LOL). So they may have researched to see when NYU decisions were announced. I don’t know what the policy was in the 90s.

May also be the case that there is a little poetic license at play. Would Kate have heard back from Berklee on same day Sophie heard back from NYU on Super Bowl weekend? Seems unlikely though does it really matter? Point I think is they did happen at some point and the reactions that ensued and how that impacted everyone’s lives going forward.

I thought the apartment building was in Trenton. Randall lived in the Princeton area and William was busing into Philly to feed his cat.

The apartment building is where William lived, and where the cat still lives. If it used to be in Philadelphia, it probably hasn’t moved to Trenton.

The show definitely takes dramatic license with travel times. I thought Randall lived in Short Hills or someplace like that, too, which is probably 90 minutes from Philadelphia most of the time. Princeton and Trenton are half way between them.

I consistently like the show, and I find myself crying or on the verge of tears every episode. I like some characters more than others, and always like Sterling K. Brown. I try hard not to read too far into the ‘is it plausible’ issue, because it is a TV show, and they’re allowed to stretch in whatever way they need to
as long as it’s not ‘there was plutonium in the wedding ring which allowed them to slip through solid walls into an era that hasn’t existed yet’ - that’s where I draw the line! I will bring a box of tissues on the ‘how DID Jack die?’ episode.

@JHS Had to investigate more on this.

They live in Alpine, NJ Their address was on the postcard William set to Beth! 07624 Bergen County
wow - that’s far from Philly

Good detective work, @JerseyParents!

We are in SOOOO deep. #mastersleuths

Did anyone else see this? Poor Crockpot. As if they’re not already suffering because of the Instant Pot’s success.

I don’t get it. In the show, it was a gift from a neighbor - which I thought was already very used, and with a faulty switch - and the fire happened 17 years later. So the defective or worn slow cooker was probably 20 - 30 years old. Why is everyone freaking out about their own Crock Pots?

I bet tons of people own crock pots that are 20-30 years old or older.

But, yeah, a little irrational to extrapolate a tv series plot device to a cause for concern.

Maybe the makers of Crock Pot should thank the show. How many people are now questioning If theirs is old and wiring bad? Sales may increase because of this.

True - I’d probably replace mine if watching the show reminded me that it had frayed wiring or a touchy knob. But in general, those are really safe appliances. Now, will people replace with a CrockPot or an InstantPot? Good question!
