This Is Us. Anyone watching?

“Did anyone think it was odd that Rebecca was afraid of bridges? That was right, wasn’t it?”

Yes! I was thinking the same thing. Especially the bridge that was shown. I agree, that’s not a scary bridge when it comes to bridges.

Foreshowding. There will be a bridge thing.

@deb922 - Ah, but didn’t you love the fact that Randall knew the word for an irrational fear of bridges – Gephyrophobia?!?

It was just a throwaway scene to show how after Jack’s death she needed to overcome her fears (they do show her going over a bridge without closing her eyes in one of the last scenes. I also explains where Randall’s panic attacks and anxiety issues come from.

And yes, the paternalism taking place in the car dealership was a tad annoying, especially given that we aren’t dealing with the 1950’s when paternalistic attitudes were par for the course. I suppose it was just another example of Jack’s magnetism winning the day.

Jack’s dismissal of Rebecca at the car dealer struck me as, “I’ve got this, honey. Don’t worry you’re pretty little head about it. The men need to talk about it.” Ugh. >:P

“I also explains where Randall’s panic attacks and anxiety issues come from.”

You think? More nurture than nature? I chalked it up to his type A, perfectionist ways that get out of hand sometimes when he takes on too much that he fears failing.

We still don’t know why Kate ended up with the urn. After last night’s episode, I was wondering if since Randall got Jack’s watch and we know Kevin got his necklace, that the urn was what was left for Kate. I hope they explain how that happened.

I still can’t deal with spring weather in Pittsburgh in late Jan/early Feb. People don’t sit outside for long periods of time and the trees do not have green leaves on them.

Y’all have to suspend disbelief with the weather…at least they were wearing jackets and there were some fallen leaves.

@doschicos - I forgot for a second that Randall was adopted (given the race thing, you’d think that wouldn’t slipped by so easily…it’s been a long day…way too long to get into a nature/nurture thing…)

Yes, the scene in the dealership bugged me big time. Oh, but that scene with Kevin and Randall and the watch … yikes. That was so sad to me.

And, yes, the weather and the light outside. Where was the tree in relationship to the funeral home that it got so dark? Made it seem hours away. Getting distracting.

@shellfell says

They are at the tree disposing of Jack’s ashes. When Rebecca hands the urn to Kate and says she can throw the ashes, Kate says something like “Can we keep some?” Rebecca says sure. Jack and Randall have already thrown “their ashes,” so Kate is left with her share of Jack’s ashes in the urn.

At least, that’s my recollection.

My favorite part was the watch scene…as that rang very, very true. People go crazy after a death…,they will argue over who gets what flowers from the funeral. Kevin feels like he comes in last to begin with, and now Rebecca Lets Randall keep the watch? I’m sure she was just saying “yes” without thinking. A fathers watch is a prized memento for a son. Men generally don’t wear much jewelry, typically just a watch. It was insensitive, although understood, of Randall and Rebecca. I totally get his anger.

I liked the episode, it pulled on my heartstrings even though some things were corny.

The car dealership scene didn’t bother me. I saw it as a negotiating strategy by Jack and it worked better with just Jack making the pitch.

Not sure why they showed the cup in the cup holder, unless that’s where Kate put the ashes. I’ve heard people do this, putting ashes in a paper cup and driving around with them. Wonder if this will pop up again.

I don’t think the remaining ashes are in the cup. We’ve seen the urn at Kate’s apartment before. I think the cup is just a tie to Jack that Rebecca can’t bring herself to throw away. There is a country song called “I Drive Your Truck” that describes a brother staying connected to his lost brother (a soldier) by driving a dirty truck with all of the junk left just as it was, including a drink bottle rolling around, that came to mind when she looked at that cup continually.

The car dealership scene seemed paetrnalistic to me, but I guess Jack knew Rebecca wouldn’t go for getting the Wagoneer so talking privately to the sales guy was going to be the only way they’d get that car.

I agree that the coffee cup was one of the last things Jack used so Rebecca couldn’t bear to throw it out.

I liked Rebecca’s conversation with the old doctor. If I am remembering right wasn’t he devastated by the death of his wife? So it looks like he has moved on, which is positive. The fight between Kevin and Randall is totally something my kids would do.

Jack used that cup. Rebecca is reminded of him when she looks at it.

That was some great acting by the young actors who play Kevin and Randall.

The cup could still be a resting place for some of those ashes, you wait and see.

The watch scene was so realistic. I’ve seen similar high emotion moments dealing with a death and it’s not pretty.

I was glad this episode showed family moments with the car. It reminded me of some similar memories I’d not thought of in a long time.

The main issue I had with the car dealership scene was the lack of realism. Jack pours out his heart to the salesman, and suddenly the price of the car has come down to where they can afford it? Tell me where that dealership is!

I thought this week’s episode very moving, although agree that the car buying was unrealistic.

But the funeral scenes really go me. Rebecca portrayed the grieving mom/widow so well. And the scene with the watch and Kevin lashing out at Randall seemed very believable. Also the grown up Tess scene with the little boy (who of course we were led to believe would be going to Randall and Beth) followed by Deja’s return was very well done.

Now we get the Olympics for a few weeks.

917 Haha yeah, I think it's way more likely the guy would've offered Jack 50% off his next oil change.
