This Is What Kills Me About This Process

"Of course, now that Harvard has such a huge endowment, it does seem unnecessary, but they say tradition is hard to break. Besides, it's human nature to want more money."

No, it is not.

Please refrain from making blanket statements about human nature, they almost invariably come out quite stupid. Humans existed long before money did, there is no desire for money in our nature. Many humans throughout the world (and throughout history) do not want "more money". It is our conditioning to want more money.

Let's not take the comments literally either. The overall meaning I think is clear. Remember the Seven Cardinal Sins...? They are part of human nature...whether we like it or not. Envy, jealousy, selfishness, ...and yes..wanting more money.... all lousy qualities that plague mankind....

Again, reality check people.

jealousy, selfishness, and wanting more money are not part of the Seven Cardinal Sins....the only sin you mentioned that is part of the seven is Envy...

and Seven Cardinal Sins are NOT part of human nature.....they are just man-made list of the most common categories for the man's tendency to sin....

i never knew strangers could fight like that.

aLL that said though it is pretty crushing for a truly outstanding student to fall prey to the system which albeit is a tiny percentage of the students accpeted but nonetheless is an unfair one. By this i mean the developement cases. i have personally known of a few which are downright stomach turning. I agree money is not a NECESSITY. We were not created with that being something we needed to live, its not one of basic necessities, of food, shelter, warmth,etc..............we as a society are driven to want more and more money, we are not exclusive to it but are defenitely a country obsessed with it so to have it infiltrate into our colleges is not a surprise.

"Let's not take the comments literally either. The overall meaning I think is clear. Remember the Seven Cardinal Sins...? They are part of human nature...whether we like it or not. Envy, jealousy, selfishness, ...and yes..wanting more money.... all lousy qualities that plague mankind....

Again, reality check people."

No. Many humans throughout the world do not share those traits, and man who do were constructed to through their society. And you sound very stupid when you act as though you understand the nature of humans. Scientists much more qualified than you couldn't begin to make such statements, what gives you the authority? Many people are not selfish, they'll give and share everything they own. Just because our culture and its people promote selfishness does not mean that every culture does.

I have to say after looking at grotongirls posts, i think many of you were unnecessarily harsh on her, she has a really vaild point and to some i guess she was a little obnoxioius but some of you were just really not cool. its a big problem that many schools have to deal with and its not easy explaining to top studnets parents that little privledged one got in instead of their child because they have the money to muscle their way in. i personally think its disgusting but at the same time recognize the need for it at least for a few families every year, a necessary evil for sure.

Curiouser and curiouser

I apologize in advance for continuing this thread, but I just couldn’t resist. ☺ Can't anybody here keep a story straight? :)

1) Which is it?
A) Freshman at Stonehill or junior in HS?
B) 2 siblings or 4 siblings?

KellyConn1 5/6/06
Ironically i applied because i was a fairly good fit and it was a safety school, funny thing is i got waitlisted, hence this crazy year for admissions! so.......now that i am having second thoughts about studying business, call me crazy, …, since we live in NY. … I literally have like 3 days to make these decisions.....so confused! i want to go up to stonehill this week

KellyConn1 6/7/06 – same thread
hi figgy well i did decide on stonehill afterall, after I looked carefully at their student profile, and visited i was really impressed. Its like a small BC. Its not as known as some of the area boston schools but apparently on the rise, and i met two kids from my school who are graduating, one transferred from BU to stonehill in his soph. year and said he wouldn't trade his experience there for anything. I just overall got a great feeling about the school, …

KellyConn1 2/14/07
Ok so here i am in my juinor year......trying hard. I had a horrible 9th grade year,(don't ask) but each year have progressively improved. This year I am taking 3 IB courses and am earning a solid B in each, across the board my average is a 83. I know nothing compared to a lot of the ivy league quality scholars out there but good for me. …

I know Miami is a reach, but you never know. … I have a sister who is transferring to BC and a brother who graduated from an Ivy League school, I was the "social one" who didn't take studying as seriously as I should, the schools they went to weren't for me but at the same time I do want a good school. … my parents refuse to pay for a California school as that was my first choice. I did about 1600 on my PSAT and am hoping for a 1800-1900,

KellyConn1 2/14/07 –same thread
Ido not come from a family of average students, my parents are both major intellects who have busy careers and I have four siblings all of whom went to top schools,

2) How did SHE ever get in to Roxbury Latin?

KellyConn1 5/21/06
i have a friend who was at roxbury latin and had grades that frankly would not have gotten in her at harvard from MY school, a top prep school in suburban NY but got her in from there........go figure. I guess the relationship is cozy over there, because i have heard of those with under 1340 getting in, drives some crazy!

Roxbury Latin School
The School’s goal today is to offer young men the finest secondary education available. Roxbury Latin has about 280 boys in grades 7-12.

3) How does one get in to UVA without applying?

5/6/06 thread
Admission survey. (for anyone applying to college)
I'm doing a study of sorts for my own personal knowledge on the topic of school anxiety. This is far from a formal survey (there are no controled subjects, no formalized tests, no random sample selection), but it'll probably result in something more anecdotal.
It's simple. Answer the following questions in as many words as you see fit, but answer carefully:
(1) What colleges have you applied to for Fall 2006?

KellyConn1 5/6/06
1.indiana-kelly, wisconsin-madison,bu,bc,stonehill, bentley, michigan, usc, ucla

4/27/06 thread “Accepted at UVA, but attending…?”

KellyConn1 4/29/06
Nope, not money, I got a faculty scholarship from Indiana, about 10k, nothing from Bentley and nothing from UVA, I am leaning more towards Bentley or Kelly because they are excellent programs, Bentley is #7 for their accounting/finance major which is my primary interest and Kelly is #11 overall in the country............once I visited especially Bentley, I loved everything about it, going to Indiana on Monday. UVA is a excellent school but for what I want to do, it is my preference to likely attend one of the two mentioned.

(Someone did comment later in that thead that UVA’s undergraduate business program was ranked 2nd in the country.)

4) It all comes back to Groton?

KellyConn1 5/21/06
you are all forgetting Groton, who MORE THAN ANY OTHER BOARDING SCHOOLS, sends sometimes as much as 40% of their class to the Ivies, namely Harvard and Yale, both my cousins went there and both are at Harvard, its not as talked about as exeter and andover but do your research and you will see........

Good call, Odyssey.

To be fair, she never explicitly said she had ONLY two siblings in Wednesday's post.

I must say Odyssey, irrefutable evidence beats heated diatribes on CC anyday :-).

Some more on the OP:

02-13-2007 - WOW amazing, when I think about what I did to get to my highest score of over 2300 this kind of makes me a teeny bit jealous, but good for him, I mean its really amazing! Stop discounting what he did all of you saying its easy, we are talking a 10 year old here!

01-28-2007 - OH MY GOD! ARE YOU PEOPLE NOT LISTENING??????????????? Not all of you, some of you sound genuinely nice and actually get it.
Lets go over this one more time....yes I got into Yale BUT I have 12 AP's, all 5's, a 4.1 gpa, nearly 2300 on my SAT's...

So, did GG make over a 2300, or nearly a 2300?

All of these lies confuse me. Really, is there any reason to fictionalize and take on an entire personality on CC just to make a statement?

I'll also add, GG, I really did feel sympathy for you when you first made your post. But after about 13 pages of random posts, I have come to believe that you are a strange strange individual.

What is the count of AP test scores? Have any of the courses been identified on any of the threads?

Nothing else on APs, but there is this for potential amusement:

1) The new middle class?

GrotonGirlie 1/21/07
I have often wondered this as I have gone through this crazy process and watched my brother go through it a year ago

Grotongirlie 1/28/07
Just for the record, although Groton wasn't for me for a host of reasons, it was a great choice for my sister

Grotongirlie 1/28/07
2. I am not rich, …, my father is in his family business, and my mother is a historian.
3. I am NOT spoiled
5. Yes, my father went to Yale

Grotonfirlie 1/21/07
Just to clarify, no money is not the issue here. It is purely him feeling like i am being "disloyal" to a school which he attended and is still very loyal to.

Grotongirlie 2/13/07
Harvard is my #1, Stanford was a close second but my dad just laid down the fact that he won't pay for me to go to school in Ca.

Grotongirlie 2/2/07
I DO NOT under any circumstance come from any kind of "priveledged background", I am from a upper middle class family at best with two hard working parents, average house,etc.........please DO NOT at my expense paint me to be some lucky little spoiled girl

Three college educations to pay for by the time its over - At least five years of Groton tuition paid for already – and dad it seems is paying it all out of pocket since money isn’t an issue but his deciding he won’t pay for Stanford is. (...and no mention ever of financial aid) That works out to about a cool million dollars to be spent out of pocket in after tax dollars on Groton and colleges over an 8 (?) year period.

2) Did someone say Stonehill (someone else keeps mentioning that school) is just like Harvard?

GrotonGirlie 1/21/07
I mean take Yale, Harvard, Princeton and then take a school you have never heard of. What makes Yale and Harvard take the top two spots every year over these others? If you went blindfolded and stepped into each respective classroom, would you say I am certainly at an Ivy here or I am not in a nationally recognized universtiy here? I really have to think we might all be surprised at how in a good school, few would know where they are. As an example I visited my cousin at Stonehill in Boston, which is a great but very small school in Easton outside of Boston. I sat in on two classes there and must admit I was blown away, I mean I could have easily been on Harvards campus, and I did visit there so can say that the classes I sat in on were remarkably comparable. ...it just got me wondering.

3) …but it still keeps coming back to Groton.

Grotongirlie 1/28/07
Just for the record, although Groton wasn't for me for a host of reasons, it was a great choice for my sister. Someone above spoke about it "not being that great", their average SAT is 2080 and here is a list of their 2006 acceptances, not too shabby for a school that "is that not great", huh?

10 Most Popular College Choices (# Enrolled)
Harvard 27
Princeton 23
Brown 19
Georgetown 18
Trinity 15
Yale 14
U. of Virginia 13
Bowdoin College 11
Cornell 9
Columbia 8

Lets get one thing straight, but nice homework even still. This as anyone can see is a name that has been on CC for a while. I personally am new to this board but my sister used the name prior to, so this should set the record straight. For anyone keeping track I have 4 siblings, most of the posts above were my sisters who is away at school now. You do your homework though I must admit, I can defenitely see where you think there might be some "conincidences" but thats about all they are. Have a nice night.

You know kelly, you type a lot like groton. Have a nice night.

:)

... and I'm sure its just another coincidence that Kellyconn1's first post in over 6 months comes less than 12 hours affer GG disappears... (given a time out it would seem) ... and for her to find this thread and post on it within an hour. ... and then even though ignored, to post here again and again the next two mornings...at just about the same time GG used to post...eery!

... and another yet again with the Stonehill and Groton connections! Your sister must go to school with GG's cousin at Stonehill and your cousins must know GG's sister from Groton. What a small world indeed!

Of course the girl friend supposedly graduating from Roxbury Latin and the apparent claim of being accepted by UVA without applying...those would require a descriptor other than "coincidence". :)

etc. etc. etc.

wow you are so suspicious that i don't think i am going to even justify it with an answer. think what you want with all due respect i really don't care.

GG is actually insane. Please let this be the last post on this thread.

Does anyone think that those not applying for financial aid who apply to the ives are at an advantage? I am not talking about International students but applicants here in the US. I know the schools are all need blind, but I was just curious.

At Post # 219:

Boy, you sure picked the wrong thread for asking this question. The short answer is that you need not worry about it.
