oh boy. why is this turning into a "gays arent that great battle" ? Okay so from a book i read, being an asian homosexual is in your favor. Not becuase its rare, but it yields a great essay opportunity. take advantage of your experinces and let it come out in your essay. attempt to emphasize how your experiences will affect/influence/better the college you are entering.

Ehh... NO. It's more like 3% male and 1-2% female that are gay. It's a common misconception - like the "fact" that people only use 10% of their brain. That's completely false.

To the OP: You seem to have been through a lot in life, and no matter the importance of being homosexual, the fact that you have carried through with your life and still maintain a respectable GPA/score is amazing. Regarding people saying that your scores are too low... check your college's median SAT scores. Most are not as high as you think (Columbia has like 2100 or something).

When people refer to "matches" it's supposed to mean schools that your SAT scores match up to. For example, Columbia is technically a "match" for you because your SAT score is 50 points above the median (as in at least half the current class has a lower SAT score than you do).

Most people don't do that because 1) they don't really know what they're talking about and just as likely, 2) with Ivy League schools, it's hard to tell. Still, you have a good chance at most of your schools.

...so, I have no idea why I went on this semi-rant in a thread that I think is rather stupid (I'm against all chance threads, lol), but I liked your story. ;)

Apply to the colleges you want to - you've got a good shot.

Thanks everyone for your tips and criticism. It really does help a lot.
Unfortunately, sometimes my homosexuality kind of overshadows a lot of the other qualifications I have. The replies that I've gotten here are serve as evidence of that. It isn't that I'm homosexual, or if I'm an Asian homosexual, or if I'm an Asian homosexual with a neurological disorder (though I am) that I hope to completely run off to every college that I want. Understandably, it's only an aid, perhaps (as much as I hate to say it) even only weak compensation for my other faults such as my GPA and SAT. And for another thing, it really does depend on the reader. Depending on what they know about the things that I am and what they understand about my idiosyncrasies will push me closer towards the rejection pile or the acceptance list.

But again, thank you all, any more help would be appreciated.

Hey, best of luck to you, but keep in mind that being gay does not serve much of a hook at the liberal schools (Brown, Yale) since they have such a large gay population already. This could work in your favor at schools like Middlebury, Dartmouth, and Duke. Furthermore, I don't think the struggles of coming out could compensate for an above-average-but-not-stellar GPA. I'm saying this as a gay guy who's trying to think of the best way to portray himself in the application. For example, I will avoid focusing my essays on coming out, unless I come up with some fresh ideas. Btw, I'm applying to some of the same schools, except as a junior transfer.

sent you a PM! :D check your inbox.

btw. what songs did you use on your site? intro + japanese song = addictive.

and i really don't get some people. it's not like he's trying to say "i'm gay, i'm special, they'll accept me." he was just stating those things as factors to take into consideration. collegekid, you're making it sound like he was fishing for praises of "omg you're in" & acting like he was some ultra ultra special person because he's homosexual. uh, no.

Some of your harder schools (Columbia, Stanford, Yale) get 20,000 applications a year. Your story ain't that special in their eyes. Interesting, but not a hook.

Oh, and MIT will like you. Apply.

I loved the intro of your website. Tasteful! I would love to see the rest of it.

Some years ago, there was a guy on here-- Asian (Vietnamese), also gay, who had a phenomenal profile. Something to the likes of NIH-funded research, RSI (?). Low-income, allegedly worked to support his family, top GPA but mid-1300s score (out of 1600). He reported a phenomenal interview. Don't know what his essays were about or how his teachers perceived him. Anyway, he was waitlisted or rejected by Harvard and now attends Stanford. Don't remember where else he got in.

tasteful? hell, the trance is completely badass. need to download me some asian techno remixes now...

^however, collegekids advice is good in that alta should look for more match/saftey type schools.

I'd say that the schools you're looking at are all uber-competative, and while you should apply if you want to go there, you need more reliable options, also.

As helpful as all of this is, I think that the only way I can find out whether or not I can get in to these schools really depends upon what happens come a few months from now. As an axiom, opinions on my situation cover a wide range of different attitudes. Understood, I should get more safety schools -- and it makes sense, I have a very risky profile and I should try and get as much falling back as I can. Another thing that is understood, I can't rely on my "situation" to compensate for everything -- I hardly do. As I've said before, me being a homsexual tends to overshadow a lot of the qualities that I would want the admissions officers to notice (though I can say that some of it I don't mind getting glossed over), and really, I hope they are wise enough not to think that I'm just another gay guy hoping for special admittance -- I'm not: I don't belong in a different category of applicants, I'm just an applicant with a not-so-usual circumstance.

life is risky. be tom cruise and slide on the hardwood paneling of experience to the doorway of wisdom.

(if you slide past it, whoops.)

p.s. what is the techno song on your website? it's been playing like nonstop in the background.

haha same here, enderkin!

uchicago doesnt even have architectual or any of that kind of student if you want to go into a school for that. It is a good school for business students!

I don't need anyone to chance me anymore, as I have already turned in all my applications and it is particularly useless at this point to get me chanced anyways (it may even be disasterous.) But just in case you are wondering, since I last posted I have a 2390, and my list of schools have changed since then (but I do not think I will post them, to avoid any more discussion.) But I would like to thank those of you who gave the input earlier, and those of you who have somehow managed to get back to me about my chances. Again thank you, but seeing as I can do nothing about my applications at this point, I'd rather not have this discussed anymore.
