This questions is bothering me from the math fill in the blank
http://www.imageaddicts.net/uploads/wxyz.jpg
I got 5940 for the answer, but regardless it took me like at least 8 solid minutes to figure it out, and I am in Calculus BC, that doesn't seem fair at all.

it was 5940. that was a very fair question.

WXYZ, X = W+Y+Z, W = Y+1, Z = W-5.

so X = 3W - 6; x is going to be as high as possible (w+y+z), so start it at 9. therefore w=5, y=4, and z=0.

i cant see the picture

well it's intuitive

-it was like z = x + y + w or something, and they're all ints so z is 9 at max, so you know x + y + w = max of 9, and all the ints are positive
- then it was like y = w - 1 and z = w - 5, so you know that w was max 5, because y = w - 1 (4), and z = 0.

yeah, but the amount of time it took, i mean if i didn't have that kind of extra time to sit there derive all these formulas, realize that you dont have a number that is normally there on the SAT, and plug in numbers until you get one that fits, theres no mathematical way to get it

Damn... I didn't realize the max... I spent a good 5 minutes pluging in two digit number instead of integers. I guess that's number 2 I got wrong on the math section (first one was the perimeter of the flag).

-The Twice Wrong Coot66

This question also gave me some trouble looking back on it..
the problem regarding 5 colors and a 2 tone ball, with a diagram of the ball
Heres what I got, although contradictory to the answers other people got on the forum.
yeah but umm like even then.. 10 appears to be, since they had to be different colors, although nowhere did it say anything about them being opposite one another.. which means
1-2 2-1 3-1 4-1 5-1
1-3 2-3 3-2 4-2 5-2
1-4 2-4 3-4 4-3 5-3
1-5 2-5 3-5 4-5 5-4
the answer would have been 20.. This is not repeating colors, and I think the significance of the diagram was to show that the ball colors being reversed would be completely different ball .. anyone agree or disagree?

coot66, what did you get for the perimeter?

5940 was correct.

isnt the perimenter 90?

Yes.....(10 char).

20 is what i got

yeah its 90

haha i took me 10 minutes to do as well.

you have to resort to subsitituting values. Its pretty much impossible to solve algebraically

yeah, I just feel bad for the kids who like practiced with the SAT booklets where there is always a way to solve it algebraically.. I mean I don't think I have ever seen a problem where you literally had to plug in numbers with no other choice.

I jjust realized that you cant have any value >9. After that it was quite simple.

same here ^^^^ realized during my last 30 seconds of my 10 minutes solving the problem

doodie, I got 90 too.

lol i figured that out when time was up, thankfully my test admin was old, and didnt seem me write it in during the next section

ha... I never solve any problem algebraically...always backsolve, plug in numbers, my asian techniques..
