This sentence completion make no sense, can someone help?

Here's the question:

The representative was a traditionalist, reluctant to support any legislation inconsistent with the nation's most ---- principles.

Answers: A. orthodox B.Not important C.precarious and D/E. Not important

Now the answer is A, but I don't think it's right because why would the traditionalist be reluctant to support any legislation that differs from traditional views (orthodox). I picked C because I interpreted it as the traditionalist wouldn't support something that is precarious.

This is a collegeboard test- so I know i'm wrong and they're right-but why is A right. It just seems completely incorrect.

Lol. Look up the definition of orthodox. Orthodox means traditional. The word you’re thinking of is UNorthodox

The representative was a traditionalist, reluctant to support any legislation inconsistent with the nation’s most ---- principles.

I don’t see how it doesn’t make sense. Orthodox basically means traditional. Because he is a traditionalist, he is reluctant to support anything inconsistent with the country’s traditional principles. So that’s why he’s a traditionalist.

Wow I feel dumb. I thought reluctant meant willing to do something but it actually means unwilling to do something, :p
