"Those ECs are weak...."- So what's good?

ya no ****, its obviously not going to be about the process

Still, pass.

How good of an EC is qualifying for/participating as part of the US team in an international science olympiad that is a non-chem-bio-physics olympiad (e.g. informatics or earth science or astronomy)? Does this even count as an EC, or just as an award?

I never formally joined a club or the like, I simply took a few tests, was told that I could take some more tests, studied up for about 4 months, and then took more tests 0_0"

I feel that, like stated earlier, a good EC is one your fully committed to and spend a lot of time with.

Like with my Robotics team. We start in September by organizing stuff, getting back together and such. We are a combined school effort, and we have various departments for everyone. We spend 2 straight months, literally sometimes afterschool 2-9 and weekends 12-8 or so, working on our robot and promoting our team. We travel typically to two regionals, Boston and another. The parents make food for the team each late night, which shows effort. People clock in 200 hours for one season, and our team is committed. The point is, something like this is something that would be a good EC. (Sorry if I was more or less promoting myself, just meant to have an example.)

What makes a good EC from a great EC is leadership. If you're being a leader in you're school and community in ECs then it's all the more impressive.

How strong of an EC is being a member of countywide student committees that work on countywide school issues affecting students every day? I am on a few and I am really loyal to my positions on them. I attend a lot of meetings on weekday evenings.

Will it make me stand out as an applicant for top colleges? However I am not on my school's SGA so I don't know if that will hurt me.

I sometimes feel like I am at a slight disadvantage in regards to ECs...I go to a TINY (90 people in grades 9-12) school, and we hardly have any clubs or anything like that. Do you guys know if schools take that into account? I mean, I've been decently active in my community (some service and tutoring)...There are so many things I would have participated in in a large public school, but I didn't go to one. I did, however, take advantage of what my teensy school offered.

I guess my question is do schools just know when your school doesn't offer the things other schools offer? Because I look at other people's sports, debate club, model UN, etc and I'm just like wow I got nothing here and I feel like I'm at a disadvantage.

remember, when it comes to EC's it's "depth, not breadth." the quantity of your ECs don't matter as much as how involved you are. Are you the president? Did you start the club? Have you won awards for the club? Is the club challenging and national recognized (i.e. newspaper, FBLA, NHS, FCCLA, etc... vs. a knitting or comic book club with only 5 members).

Wow the last few lines.. amazing

What is TASP, RSI, WNL?

Totally agree with Mewrue! Im being put at a disadvantage since the school i attend has offered few activities as compared to the other elite schools.
Considering that my results are good (within my school context) but I have no major leadership positions in the activities I had participated. Im really perplexed about my situation!(I felt even worse after reading all the other students' achievements at cc)

Can someone please enlighten me what are my chances of getting into Oxbridge?

That's ridiculous. Very, very, very few people have such extra curriculars and are able to gain admittance into great colleges. Maybe not Yale, but very good colleges. What I've found is that people who show that they aren't doing the ECs just for college but because they are passionate about them tend to be successful. That means you should spend lots of time consistently volunteering at a certain place or something of the sort.

What if there's one major thing you've been focusing on for over 28 hours a week? Say you started an organization that you commit 4 hours or so to every single day for the past year, or a company, or something that really shows initiative and is not common at all. If this is pretty much the only thing you have (other than the usual MUN, 80 social service hours, Olympiads, etc) what are your chances to universities like JHU, Rice, Cornell etc?

I'm going to apply to University of Chicago, Duke, Emory, Wake Forest, ect. My GPA is a little low, so I might have to rely on my ECs a little more. Do you think I have a chance?
