I just meant that the thread had long since moved on from the original few responses.

âPeople should calm down about the ECs and take the recommendations of other posters with a grain of salt.â

Gee, ya think? How about the entire shaker? LOL.

Guys, are administration of schoolâs official website and leadership in student clubs âgoodâ ? I see many applicants have it

There is no such thing as an ideally good EC. Every EC can be deemed valuable, depending on your fervor, dedication, and degree of involvement.

I feel quite inferior reading all these posts. Sadness.

I like adamantineXâs answer.

:]

I started an online business (very related to major - Required C++ debugging and programming, MySQL management, network security and other skills -made a considerable revenue of around 60k, was reaching around ~25000 unique visitors a month at some point in time.
My major is computer engineering. How much would this help me.

Would playing tennis for only junior and senior year make a difference? or would playing for all 4 years of high school make a difference?

Maybe an uncommon tradional instrument for more than 10 years?

Do you think spending the fall semester of your junior year working in Congress as a House page is impressive (i.e. an outstanding EC)?

I think the answer is no, but Iâll ask: Does self-studying for AP exams count as an EC?

What are some good ECâs that demonstrate leadership? Is Amnesty Internation Club a good one?

Lol the last six posts have all been questions with no answers.

Donât get your hopes up, I donât have any answers either

I totally agree with you. I live in mainland China, and there just isnât much to do here. I mean, most people here have never heard of animal shelters and they think that youâre trying to cheat theyâre money if you ask them to donate anything if youâre not a government organization.I even got rejected by the city volunteer committee(thatâs what they call it here) because Iâm underage!
And most schools simply donât give you the time to do ECs as the system is different here, good scores are the only thing that helps you get into a top university. I have 10periods a day which ends at 6:30 pm, and then we barf down dinner followed by required study hall, then most kids do there homework until 1:30 am. We have Saturday classes, Sunday is devoted to even more studying if you want to keep up with the class.
Whatâs more is that we spend so much time studying but we still get âbad gradesâ.Our science average for a test is usually around 60 points out of 100, and weâre among the best schools in the province. And itâs really difficult to win a science/math competition because there are loads of math freaks around here. The SAT math section is a joke for us (no exaggeration), I could get a perfect score when I was in the fifth grade(yes, I tried back then). But still, I only have like a 2.0 GPA in Math.
I know that admission officers probably know about the Chinese system and expect less on things like ECs. But I sometimes think that the American application system is just unfair.

Garfieldkiller, I would say ânoâ to that. Although itâs academic and takes up a lot of time, itâs also something you are expected to do if you want to do well on the exams. Your AP scores will reflect that.
Mastermind, I wouldnât think it would make a HUGE difference. Once its on your app, I donât think it makes a big difference how long you played, as long as you played for more than the first week of school ;]

^
I thought so. The reason I asked was I wanted to know if self studying would make a significant boost to my app

Would helping a game creator fix one of his games be a good/unique EC?

Do whatever you like to do.

^
Well, itâs something Iâve already done

Thanks for the helpful info

Garfield, Iâd say that would be an interesting EC if you plan on majoring in something related to game design. Even general computer work.
