Thoughts on the anthro department/museum studies?

Hello

I am very interested in Brown’s graduate museum studies program run through the anthropology department. Does anyone here have experience with either? Which professors are the best (and worst) in teaching, research, and advising? How much emphasis is devoted to grad students (I know that Brown focuses on undergrads, but I would like any specifics on what academic life is like for grad students)?

Does anyone have opinions of the Haffenreffer Museum? On the slight chance that anyone reading this has actually attended the museum studies program, what did you think of it? What kind of thesis projects were you encouraged to do? How long does it take the average student to complete the program?

Thank you very much for any thoughts you may have.

As I'm sure you know, it's a very new program (at least in its new incarnation). Museum Studies has been replaced by an MA in the "Public Humanities". My impression is that it will draw on a lot of the best of what Brown has to offer--particularly the Anthro, Am Civ, and other strong departments. Stephen Lubar, who was recently recruited from the Smithsonian Institution to run the program, is supposed to be a rock star of sorts

Thanks very much, dcircle. Sorry I haven't checked your post until just now. Are you in a current museum studies program run through either department? I know this is pretty unlikely, but thought I would ask.

The websites of the new and old programs have a lot of good information, and the professors' books have even more. What I would really like to find, however, is any student comments on American Civ/Anthropology faculty teaching. Ideally I would like to hear any conventional wisdom about who there is the best advisor, or what Dr. Shepard Krech lll is like.

Thanks very much for posting the web links. This is very thoughtful. Thank you.
