thoughts on this list of engineering schools for my son to vist/apply to?

SUNY’s are pretty reasonably-priced for OOS.

huge thanks so far to all who offered advice…Ok, so my terminology is off, I guess I mean Need Based Aid, not necessarily Merit Aid. alot of this is new to me. i dont know if its efc or afc or what…

beantown girl: he took sats in jan and got a 1790. second time in march he got 1840. he is taking acts in april. his low english scores in march were eye opening for him and we thought a retake in oct (his third time) with some private tutuoring august/sept for the english portion may be helpful. do you think waiting till october to take the sats for the thrid time will be too late?

the first school we visited, Rowan, looked like a good match. 22k for tuition, room and board , and my son may qualify for 4-6k in merit aid there which brings it to 16-18k. can it get cheaper than that?? my son really liked it, and i think it would be a good fit, small classes, etc. paying for this school is going to be a stretch… also want to see what other options are out there…

EFC = expected family contribution, as calculated by colleges in determining financial aid offers
AFC = actual family contribution, what you are actually able and willing to contribute to your son’s education

ESC = expected student contribution, which is what colleges expect the student to contribute (e.g. Stafford loans, work or work study earnings – typical number is about $8,500)
ASC = actual student contribution, which is what your son will actually be able to contribute (e.g. if you and he are debt averse, you may not want to take the typical $5,500 Stafford loan)

If AFC + ASC < EFC + ESC, then even “meet full need” schools will come up short, so you need to emphasize big merit scholarship schools.

Re: ACT and SAT

He may want to start with whichever score is higher and try to raise it from there (by test-specific studying) for next fall.

Re: testing - I thought the scores you posted were for his first attempt, that is why I questioned the timing. But since he has already done it twice, waiting until October will test prep in the meantime sounds good. Also, he may find the ACT more to his liking.

Aubrey, it doesn’t sound like your son would like Lehigh. Plus its very expensive.

I went to York and I’m sure he could get some aid there to lower the already low price.

Penn state is expensive in state yet alone out of state. Its in state sticker price is more then York and its a giant public school. Also, many people have to start at a satellite campus their first two years then xfer to main campus. Keep in mind you could wind paying a lot of money for that.

Add SUNY Buffalo and Stony Brook for engineering.
