Thread for BSMD 2020-2021 Applicants (Part 1)

CA kids have very little choice if keen on BSMD. It is east coast vs mid-west vs south vs south-east - everything is away from home

Unrelated to college admissions, unless college funds are in investment accounts, but stocks continuing to fall. Any existing stock groups in CC to browse for stock tips?

you have lovely CNU

:rocket: :rocket: :rocket:

And my DD was ready to go there!!

Apologies if anyone finds CNU highly unfavorable. We are in tech world where college/prestige does not matter (as much) if one is good at their trade. A solid programmer will get hired even if they never went to school. So some of the finer nuances of pushback on colleges like CNU escapes us but I understand school name/ prestige factors in more due to Step 1 becoming P/F.

Programmer is complete incorrect comparison. A programmer w/o UG/any degree can hired by a software company or can start own company, That is not the case if one wants to work as medical professional.
2nd even a programmer w/o degree can’t join a professional programs (MS and PhD), medicine is also a professional program, hence all nuances to have good UG score along with MCAT.
One thing I have learnt that eng and medicine admissions are 2 opposite ends of spectrum and both are right in their own domain.

I agree completely, I am just saying that I do not fully (or even partially hehe) understand the medical field. With both kids now seeming to gravitate to medicine, I am beginning to get educated by them, like it or not

Leaning never ends. :slightly_smiling_face:

I know, it’s a tough situation. It’s just her opinion. Fortunately this year one college bs/md was cancelled and the other one is tough to reach. Even if it was a bs/md my C wouldn’t have been that happy to be here. It would have been very difficult for us to convince in that situation and also she is not so keen on BS/MD and thinks this is not the only path to be a doctor. I agree with her and at the same time after hearing different stories of getting into medical college in a regular route we started considering BS/MD. Even now we’re not really sure which is the right path. We will decide when we have all the options in April.

My older DD learned about BSMD last minute. Once she understood all that took for medical school apps and had spent a lot of time on BSMD apps, she just didn’t want to go through it all over again. She said she would either go BSMD or not go for MD at all.

My younger DD started with the same attitude. However, she thoroughly enjoyed the BSMD app process and interviews. She likes PSU and if that is the only option she has, she is clear she’ll take it. If it hadn’t been so, I am confident, and so is she now, that she could have gone regular path. Even now, for one particular lottery college within driving distance from home, we are recommending traditional path, and her objection is that it is too close to home (not that it involves traditional path)

It’s Nittany Lions!

If one has few choices, of course you want to make sure to grab the best among them. BSMD applicants are not missing the elite top 5/10/20 medical schools as they are not part of this program. Then #40 versus #42 or even #52 does not matter if cost difference is enormous and the kid has no preference among them.

When applying to BSMD, we did not considered any medical school ranking but choose UG feeders where DD wants go, if she gets into BSMD. For example she did not like Union surroundings (and not a fit for Siena and RPI), as a result we did not apply to AMC programs. Similarly we did not consider SUNY Purchase as feeder for Upstate as she did not want to go.

That is precisely immature behavior that one should expect at this age from kids. When these kids turns 22 all their thought processes changes drastically from their experiences and what to consider in coming years, which are not even in thoughts right now.
Eventually every kid wants to find home and social support.

Precise the point. They are short selling themselves. Winner are UG schools who bolsters their profile by kids who otherwise won’t even select those UG let along admit.
Ofc, if student has no desire to go to T20 med schools, I conquer with your assessment.

Want to bring attention to the following post by @WayOutWestMom in the other forum on things to consider for Medical School.

It starts with Cost. Cost. Cost. Fit. In that order.
