Thread for Spring Admits

So... I saw the "Congratulations!", freaked out, and called my parents right away. then I read the rest of the email.

I'm trying to decide how I feel about this. Who else has been admitted for the Spring semester? What are your thoughts? Is it something worth doing? My primary concern would be not making friends in the dorms freshman year, graduating late, etc... Though I did read about the FFP program which looks interesting.

Please post if you've also been accepted to Spring OR if you know about the program and would like to share insight!

thanks! And to every one else out there, congratulations! We still got in:)

same situation for me…

it was quite disappointing. I am very curious to know why I was deferred, especially because i am an ELC student. Oh well.
I feel like starting in spring would really put you at a disadvantage with friends, dorms etc. but also with graduating on time. sigh.

Same here, have you guys been admitted by UCLA? could it be the reason we are placed to spring?

There is absolutely no correlation between fall acceptance to UCLA and spring acceptance for Berkeley.

Got into spring acceptance, didn’t apply to UCLA.

I already decided I wasn’t going to go to UCB whether or not I got in, so I’m not too disappointed.

i got into the other 2 UCs i applied to (sb, sd).

on the website, it says that deferral to spring means nothing, which sounds like crap to me, right?

bravenewworld- I am also an ELC student. If you read some of the other threads, you’ll see that Berkeley received more applications than ever from students with GPA of 4.0+. More than twice the # of students they were able to admit. I think the pool has just gotten a lot more competitive :(

cookie4college- i was rejected at UCLA :frowning:

I’ve been reading the FPF information and it seems like an interesting alternative. Has anyone checked that out?

bravenewworld- same! SD is my second choice, but I wonder if that would be better than spring at Berkeley

Isn’t ELC just top 4% of your class?

There are other threads on here started by actual spring admits from prior years… really informational. I think that the FPF program won’t be so bad! Going to submit my deposit asap

Accepted spring too! I didn’t even notice the Spring part until my gf pointed it out but I’m not too worried about it. I planned on traveling around anyway, so I have more time to do that maybe?

If not I’ll most likely go to a community college for a semester.

I got Spring Admit too. Agh I hate feeling like this but it’s such a blow to my pride. I’m trying to place my pride aside but at the same time it’s just like…wow. And I got into the University of Chicago and UCLA, so I actually started having confidence for UC Berkeley…I guess not all things work out the way we expected huh?

Don’t worry about being a Spring admit if that’s what you got. After your first semester (and certainly after your first year) no one will know the difference and no one will care. I know Spring admits who have done well (just as I know R&C winners who have lower grades) - even a 4.0uw/2300+ application will not save you. I have almost no idea how they choose who gets in for Fall - only R&C (and maybe that Cal Opportunity thing) guarantees that - but please don’t feel discouraged or that you won’t do as well as Fall admits because empirically that is not the case. You might miss out on a semester at cal but there are still 7+ more waiting for you. Plenty enough of Berkeley by the time you graduate.

Yeah, it can be pretty random! For example, I have a twin sister who has almost identical stats to me. She got in fall, I got in Spring.

It might be a blessing in disguise. From what I’ve heard the FPF program is actually really neat!

Yeah, It’s a blow to the ego but Berkeley is still a fantastic school. And hey- congrats on uchicago! nice!

i was a spring admit this past year and did fpf…i also tot that it sucked, but it is actually a lotttt better. fpf is awesome and is so much easier than classes on main campus. most of my friends didn’t even kno that i was a spring admit becuz there is almost no difference. I joined the same organizations, stayed in the same dorms, and hung out with the same people as all of my fall admit friends. altho right now u may think it sux, it is actually the best thing that cud happen to you (as long as you do fpf).

All of this positive feedback is totally making me feel better. I’m submitting my FPF deposit tomorrow!
