Three SAT IIs in one sitting?

I think it depends on how well prepared you are. My son did 3 in one day and got 3 800s. (To our astonishment BTW.) He had just taken the APs in two of the subjects and was also reviewing for a Regents exam in one. It was much easier to take them all at once while the material was fresh. However, he might count as one of those CC savant kids alluded to post #2 - testing comes easily to him. From a pure stamina point of view I don't think it's a problem. The question is whether you need to do a lot of review or not.

D took 3 tests in one day (Math 2C, Writing-back in the days when it was a separate test, and US History). She said that she was pretty tired by the 3rd test (Writing) and didn't feel good about it. Test results backed her up.

In the fall, she needed a science SAT so took the Bio. At the same time, she re-took the Writing SAT and did much better.

Judging from her experience, I'd only take 2 in a day. Take 2 in May/June and 2 in Sep/Oct.

Bad idea if you ask me...
I don't know about you, but I start to burn out midway through the second test...!

My S took 3 SATIIs in one day. He did OK on them but actually did better on the MathII which he took by itself in the fall of SR year (in the midst of his AP Calc AB & AP Physics C review of precalc, which really helped him review & get an 800).
My S does have endurance issues & did find it tiring to take all 3 SATIIs in one day, but not nearly as tiring as the SATI. He took the SATIIs in June, while in retrospect he thinks it would have been better for him to have taken it in May when he was studying for the APs instead of having to re-study for it in June.
Sounds like your S's plan to study & take the MathII in Jan is a good strategy. This will give him more options to figure out what he wants to take for his spring SATIIs.

My son took three last year in the middle of his APs and it was fine. The middle-of-APs part even helped with American History, because there was such a significant overlap between the tests and he had taken the AP the day before.

I took all three of my SATIIs at once. I did well, as I did much better on the SATIIs than the SATIs. Thats why I sent my ACTs.

SATI: 1260/1870/// 650 M / 610 C / 610 W
SATII: 670 LIT / 680 M1 / 610 M2
ACT: 30/// 34 R / 31 M / 30 E / 26 S

I highly recommend taking US History SAT as soon after US History AP as you can!

There seems to be a consensus of opinion that curriculum-based SAT subject exams (US History, Chem, Bio, foreign languages, etc.) should be taken as close as possible to the time of the corresponding APs. For exams that are less tied to the curriculum of one specific class (e.g., Math, English Lit), there is at least some wiggle room when it comes to timing. That’s why I’m going to suggest that my son take Math IIC in January and wait till May for the other two. In hindsight, he probably should have taken Math after he finished Precalc. Now he will have to do some review, but since the exam is not tied to any particular course he’s currently taking or planning to take later, he might as well get it done. Again, I appreciate all your opinions.

A logical time to take the MathII is when they're reviewing precalc in any class your S is taking. If he's taking physics, they often review precalc in the fall (at least in my kids' HS). That would allow him to take the Math2 when the class is covering it anyway, if he doesn't want to study for it independently (tho he can probably review whatever he needs to easily enough over winter break) & allow himself the luxury of re-taking if he isn't satisfied with his score.

Thanks for the suggestion, HImom. I'll present it to him, as he'll take Physics next fall. He's a very strong math student and standardized test taker (although he has yet to take any SAT IIs) so I'm hoping that he won't need to do much review for the Math IIC. He'll have to assess that for himself. Anyone out there whose kids waited until they were taking Calc BC to take Math II rather than taking it at the optimal time, i.e., at the tail end of Precalc?

My S took Math2 in fall of SR year, when his AP Calc AB course & AP Physics C course were both reviewing precalc. It was his highest SATII score--800!
