Good article but not surprising that the pandemic impacted low income and first gen students the most. The inequities in access got much worse during the pandemic.
I found it sobering but, unfortunately, not surprising. The article is quite the contrast to the normal discussions that happen on CC where the most typical concern is typically about where a student is going to college (i.e. not their first choice/an Ivy/Top 20) not IF they are going at all. It is a reminder that many students in our country have to go through incredible hoops just to apply to college, let alone attend. For me it puts issues like TO and the like in perspective - I am so lucky that my kids will be able to afford college and that just being able to go is a privilege. It is easy to lose sight of that in the race for prestige etc.

Thank you for sharing this article. The guidance counselors who’ve developed innovative approaches to helping these kids are heroes. While many just checked out, others stepped up.
