I am deciding whether to apply to a few Master's programs along with PhD programs in case I do not get into my top schools. Getting a PhD is my ultimate goal so I will apply to PhD program if I end up going to a Master's program after undergrad.

Since a Master's program usually only last 1.5 - 2 years, I was wondering what people normally do in the time they are waiting for admissions results or waiting for the start of their PhD program? For example, if the Master's program is 1.5 year and I attend in the fall, I would be done by the Fall of the following year and would have to wait at least 6 months before the start of a PhD program. Do people find a temporary job, take extra classes or just wait around?

Also, when is the best time to apply to PhD programs if you are in a Master's program? Is it the summer before your final semester? Thanks for your insights!
