TIME SENSITIVE: McGill vs. Haverford for pre-med

How likely are you to get French citizenship and how fast?
McGill, like most Quebec universities, tends to grade harsher than US universities. (A 3.0 is considered “high academic achievement” for their graduate school; a 75% is good, 85% is great.) I don’t know whether med schools take that into account.
What program were you admitted for at McGill?
What’s your net cost at both (don’t forget to add housing/food costs for Montreal since I don’t know whether McGill will include R&B at that late a date)?
Where would the differential come from?
Would you be allowed to apply to Quebec med schools as a French citizen if you attended college in the US (sounds like you wouldn’t but you might want to try).

We’ll let OP respond, if he wants, but he doesn’t say anything about being a dual-national. He clearly states he’s seeking a. Canadian and b. French citizenship.

I apologize for responding to all of your posts so late. I wanted to let you know that I am planning to commit to Haverford. Although McGill is very tempting because of its location and that it’s a major research university that is significantly cheaper than Haverford, Haverford seems to have a much stronger pre-med program for Americans. Thank you all for your time and help.

By the way, fortunately Haverford has moved back the deadline that I need to commit by.

Haverford has a lot of support for pre-med. There is a pre-med advisor that helps to advertise relative internships, volunteering, etc. whereas I don’t think there is a pre-med advisior at McGill. 94% of Haverford pre-med students are accepted into medical school (committee letters of support are offered to all interested pre-med students, not just the ones that have the best chance of being accepted so that Haverford’s pre-med statistics are boosted), whereas I don’t think McGill even normally offers committee letters of support for pre-med students. If I were a Quebec resident who wanted to go to medical school in Quebec, then McGill would be perfect. I have dual citizenship with USA and Germany, but I also can obtain French citizenship relatively easily from my grandmother if that would help me become Canadian. Since that is not guaranteed, I think that as an American going to McGill would not be the wisest decision as a pre-med student because I would be completely on my own, which I assume would make it challenging to get accepted into medical school.

I am pretty confident that I want to go to medical school, but I understand that this can change. However, when deciding what college to commit to I think it is important to seriously consider how strong my program would be there. If I wanted do something other than medicine, then McGill would probably be a great choice, but from the limited research I’ve done they do not seem to be particularly strong for American pre-med students.

Does anyone have more advice?

So did you go to McGill or Haverford? My son will be deciding between these 2 schools, along with a few others. Would love to hear your experience.

The OP has not been back to CC for almost two years. Please do not reopen such old threads. Closing.
