Tips for a Junior Interested in Applying to Penn?

Hi all,

I’m currently a junior. Penn is the only school I’m interested in so far. I haven’t taken the SAT or ACT yet, but judging from my PSAT score, I think it will be around a 2000 when I take it in June this year. I will be taking the SAT II in October this year. Anyway, I’m a Philadelphia resident, so I think I have a slight advantage when applying. I’m enrolled in 2 AP courses right now.

I am also in the Young Scholars Program, meaning that I’m currently taking courses at Penn for free as a high school student.

Can some current Penn students offer me some tips on what I should do over the Summer? I’ll probably be volunteering and studying for the October subject tests. Penn is a very competitive school, and I would like to do more to raise my chances. I still have many months to go before actually applying and could use some suggestions.

Thanks!

@Inkflair First off, don’t be interested in only one school. Keep all your options open as Penn is very selective and there is a good shot (not just for you but for everyone applying) that you won’t get in, so try to form a list of schools (safeties, matches, reaches) that you are interested in. It’s not a wise move to apply to only one.

Over the summer, I think you can start working on your essays. Other than that, you can do some volunteering if you want and continue to pursue any hobbies if you can.

Also, apply Early Decision if you’re sure that Penn is your dream school and if you can afford the tuition.

Hope I helped.
