Tips for High School Success

Obviously you need both, my bad for implying you don’t. I do think you should put more effort into smarter than harder though personally which was my point I guess. I see so many students put their nose to the grindstone without looking at what they’re actually doing.

Thanks for all your replies! Just one more thing… should I start SAT prep sooner rather than later (i.e. this summer)?

It’s good to start early, but don’t obsess over it or anything.

no drugs. and forget about boyfriends/girlfriends and parties. Channel all anger, jealousy and loneliness into your school work. I often say that i don’t care about high school, all i care about is the future and getting into university, i know what i want and how to get it, high school is just and unfortunate roadblock i need to pass.
Experience; spent way too much time caring about boys, makeup and clothes freshman year. forgot for sophomore year and all my marks went up by at least 5%

I can’t tell whether ^ is sincere or not.

I agree to some extent because I think it’s a waste of time to pine over people who don’t know you exist. There’s no reason to worry about dating unless you actually find yourself in a situation where you like someone who likes you back, which is almost certain to happen someday even if it doesn’t happen in high school. A worthwhile significant other will have a positive influence on you (and hopefully your grades).
You shouldn’t focus too much on the future. It doesn’t exist. The idea that everything is a stepping stone to something else will follow you your whole life. In my experience, you can’t turn it off at will.

This reminds me of this:

"First I was dying to finish high school and start college. And then I was dying to finish college and start working. And then I was dying to marry and have children. And then I was dying for my children to grow old enough for school so I could return to work. And then I was dying to retire.

And now I am dying…

And suddenly I realize I forgot to live."

Just a reminder to smell the roses as you run past. Don’t forget about girls/boys and parties, have a few fun times and remember them, enjoy, live in them. Balance is key to life, don’t overcommit too much to either lifestyle. As you are on CC, leaning academically is probably best, but don’t lean too far. You’re a kid, have some fun! Just be smart/safe about it and keep priorities straight.

Stay focused. It’s easy to lose sight of what’s important sometimes and slip into the wrong mindset.

Great thread.

Learn to love learning, whether you are in school, on the job, or in a relationship.

Embrace change, the rate of change continues to increase. Flexibility is essential.

Love yourself, there’s only one you…be the best “you” you can be.

Commit yourself to excellence, people rarely regret doing their best.

In agreement with @pengsphils, seek balance. some of the most important things in life can’t be learned in school or read in books. Live life with passion.
