To all EA musicians/artists

one of the best pianists i know is 18 and is still working on learning all the chopin etudes, with only about 6 hours practice a day. if you do have that extensive a repertoire than all the well for you, but i have to say that is really hard to believe. like everyone else says, the rach 3 alone is a monster. theres one page in that manuscript with like 500 notes on it or something.

well....i'm sure when it comes to audition time...i'll have to play a well known concerto or something...but since i was thinking that...it's supplementary material...as in part of the application...not audition....to let them know more about you...I'd thought that playing a different kind of music would portrait my unique interest...as well as skill in playing the violin (luckily i recorded the first and only time i played the song without any mistake)....and since they didn't ask for a copy of the song that you send in....I guess they're not trying to be really critical about it....probably they just want to know your style, technique, and level of your skill...i may be wrong...but that's what i had in mind.....

P.S. I think the song is from an anime called "D.N.Angel" or something....haven't watched it...so i don't know how much...or when they used the song...but I got the recording of the song...so..

ok.. so today's the day to send in my harvard app, and i STILL haven't decided if i want to send them my flute CD. I made All-state band and have done lots of music stuff, but won't it only help if you are nationally known? could it hurt my app if i sent it?

harpingchic, that's the situation i was in. i sent in a tape for EA, but it wasn't stellar... and that's probably one of the reasons why i was deferred.

nobody has given me a straightforward answer yet, so i decided to be safe and not send my cd for any of my other schools.

Bump.............

i don't think it could hurt if u sent it.

Harvard wouldn't enjoy a supplement that's just okay. But DO send them something good. If the CD isn't good but you have other strengths, don't worry about the CD too much. Send it, or don't send it. For a really good applicant, an okay CD is just a little extra thing that's not too special but appreciated slightly. But if you think you'll need music to make up for some deficiencies, then the CD should be good. Maybe if you love music a lot but are kind of a beginner, you could write about it or something.

sending in a cd/tape won't hurt you. (unless you're playing music as your greatest talent/strength and have a really crappy cd.) just do it.
playing at a very low skill level is still better than someone else who doesn't play music at all.

ok thanks guys :) i sent it. now it's 3 months of waiting.

Do/would you guys send a recording of a concerto with an accompanist or just play the solo part?

Yes, the a tempo come prima section is one of the hardest sections... but there are even harder ones.

concerto with accompaniment

i did mine with an orchestra

Im sorry for asking again, but can anyone post their recording of the rach 3 so I can hear it cuz im curious to see how you guys sound?

bumpbumpbump

theres no way to post unless one of us has a website, which isn't too likely

ok thats cool, i was just wondering... im playing the tchaikovsky concerto, how does that compare up to the rach 3 and rach 2?

You're a pianist and you've never heard the rachmaninov concertos?? They compare well because Tchaik and Rach 2 and 3 are three of the biggest piano concertos, though I wonder how you don't know that already.

Working on the Rach 2 right now, I've heard the third is much harder. Which Tchaikovsky are you talking about? The first? If so, I love that one.

LOL jono, I have tons of recordings of all three concertos, its just that ive never played rach 2 or 3. Im working on the tchaikovsky, i was just wondering how difficult the tchaikovsky was compared to the other two. I guess anyone who has played the tch. and either of the rach concertos could answer me here.

Scee- im playing the first concerto, learning first movement. Ill proally end up playing the 1st and 3rd movements. I also really like the rach 1, 1st movement!

The Tchaikovsky is a really difficult piece. Congratulate yourself. You too, Scee. Tennispro, don't worry if the Rach 3rd is slightly harder, it's like comparing climbing up a cliff and jumping off a cliff.
