To be a writer?

I am going to UNC Chapel Hill as a junior. I love to write and have taken creative writing classes in the past. The question is that if I am going to be an English major what would be a beneficial minor in case my bestselling novelist career does not work out? Journalism, business, some type of political science or law? I have a young daughter so I want to be able to have a lucrative job so that I can support her... what can I do? Also, once I graduate, what is the best school to get my master's? What schools have graduate writing programs?

Journalism is a good bet, and you probably don’t even need to study it to get a job at a newspaper if you’re a very good writer. You could also write for a magazine (New Yorker, Atlantic Monthly, Rolling Stone, etc.). I would just keep majoring in English if I were you at this point.

What kind of graduate school do you want to pursue? Do you want a creative writing M.F.A.?

I’m not sure if I want to get my M.F.A in creative writing… I guess I would want to if I could. What schools offer it? I have checked into graduate schools in my area and I don’t think Chapel Hill offers a masters in creative writing… just in english or journalism. But yeah, writing for Rolling Stone would be ideal, but is that realistic?

Also, a graduate degree from Chapel Hill or Duke? Do you think it really matters in the writing field or does it come down to my writing ability? Would I be more likely to get a good job with a degree from a school like Duke or is it kind of a waste of money?
