Reject
New York, NY 10031

Dear Reject,

The Committee on Admissions has carefully reviewed your application to Columbia University, and we are sorry to inform you we cannot offer you a place in Columbias Class of 2015. This year, over 22,000 candidates applied for places in the first-year class, making this the most difficult selection process in our history. The many strengths of the entire applicant pool as demonstrated by scholastic successes achieved, by community service performed, by activities pursued, by essays written and by books read made the selection process more competitive than simple numbers could possibly indicate. Indeed, while we are gratified by the number of candidates seeking the excitement and challenge of the Columbia experience, the size of the pool sadly compels us to disappoint a great many talented and appealing young people.

We want you to know that our decision in no way reflects a lack of confidence in your ability to achieve success in your college plans and on through life. Our experience is that the vast majority of students who do not gain admission here go on to distinguish themselves at fine colleges and universities throughout the world, and we are confident that you will do so as well. We must make clear, however, that since our decisions are made after many hours of intense deliberation, the Office of Undergraduate Admissions cannot consider any review of your decision.

We appreciate your interest in Columbia and wish you the best in your pursuit of higher education.

Sincerely,

I thought that all, including myself, should imagine that this is their email on the 9th of December.

It's better to consider the worst, so a possible fall isn't as hard.

wow thanks i needed that. Im working on getting my hopes sosososo low that when I see that letter, I won’t be surprised. NYU Stern here we come…

Another good thing to thinking you are rejected is that, if you do get accepted than you’ll be twice as happy than if you expected to be accepted, and you did get accepted.

Lol so true! So how many ED people do we have on here and are we all going to come back and tell on dec 9 th? Or will we be too busy crying?

I am an ED applicant, and I’ll be honest. If I do get rejected, then I won’t come back on here to tell…I’ll be too busy filling out my other college applications. If I do get accepted then Ill come here and celebrate lol.

Hmm I wonder what the deferral letter says.
Also I was under the impression that they sent you an email that said the decision is available, then a link to view the decision on the Columbia site - would you see this letter?

Yeah, you are probably right.

This is most likely the letter that they would send you in the mail, if rejected.

Sorry if it wasn’t perfect, I was just trying to make you face a possible reality.

they email the applicants with the decision at 5pm, right?

so excited/nervous!

No, they’ll e-mail you that your decision is ready at 5pm. Then you’ll go to your Columbia tracking page and read the decision.

You won’t get a physical letter in the mail if you got rejected from Columbia, unless you specifically request one after viewing your rejection online.

So the letter that I posted is one of them 3 that we could possibly see on the 9th…in the tracking page?

Yes, but it’ll be slightly different. This is the RD version.

damn, talk about straightforward. they let you know from the get-go. “dear reject,…”

wow

i think its a good idea to think like this.
also regardless of the decision, i think we should head back here and fill out that decision post thing (where you list your sats, grades, ec’s, and hooks). it’ll help future obsessive 2016 hopefuls with something to… obsess over.
me, looking at the 2014 ed results thread: “omg… this girl got in with the same act score as me… hmmm but she’s is a legacy. but wait… i have better ec’s than her…”

There’s no way they say “dear reject.” I took “reject” to just be a placeholder put in by the OP for a name.

^ ah, i didn’t think about that. that seems about right, lol

^^^Yes exactly. (It wasn’t even me that put “Reject” as the name…I copied this letter from someone’s '08 rejection letter that was posted on CC before. He wrote the name as “reject” so I left it.)

when will they email us with the final date notification? (not the decision, but the notification of when decisions will be released)

I assume on the same day. Once it is released they will tell you that your decision is ready.

no no… not that one… the email that tells us that the decisions and will be released on “dec 9th” etc… because we still aren’t sure of the date, are we?
srry if i was unclear :S
