To check or not to check?

I'm having an issue.
My dad is white from Alabama. My mom is Cuban. So technically I should mark "Hispanic" on all of my papers, right? I mean, theres a "White" box and it almost always says Non Hispanic right next to it.
I don't consider myself Hispanic at all. Yes, I speak Spanish, as does 1/2 of my family. However, I don't think of myself as Cuban, I think that I'm white.
What should I put in the race box, white or hispanic?

Check both.

I second the check both.

You don't seem to know that Cubans can be white. In fact, from what I've seen, most Cubans who emmigrated here are white.

While you may get a tip from being hispanic, as a person of cuban descent, you would not be considered a hispanic underrepresented minority

I think I'll probably end up checking hispanic and caucasian unless the caucasian checkbox specifically puts "not hispanic". Most apps that I have seen ask for the birth locations of my parents so I think they'll get understand the situation.
Thank you all very much for your help!
(PS How is Cuban not an URM? Here in California there are hardly any Cubans.)

Pick Hispanic, not white at all. Take full advantage. Cubans are URMs at most schools. While there might not be many in California, there are tons in Southern Florida.

Check the box that represents how you see yourself.

isn't that part of the application optional?

Sure, but it can only help.
